Annie Webb Blanton
Annie Webb Blanton (1870-1945) was an important figure in Texas history and in the rights of women. Born in Houston, Annie Webb Blanton was one of seven children and attended public schools in Houson and LaGrange. She taught in a rural school until she moved to Austin where she began teaching in both elementary and secondary schools. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1899.
Blanton served on the English faculty of North Texas State Normal College (now UNT) in Denton and became an active member of the Texas State Teachers Association. She was a strong supporter of equal rights for women and worked hard for that cause. In 1916, she was elected president of the TSTA and was the first woman to hold that position.
In November 1918, Blanton was elected to be the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. This was a difficult political race as she was a woman. However, that same year women received the right to vote in Texas and Blanton was victorious. During her tenure as the state superintendent, many reforms for public education happened: teacher certification laws were revised, teachers' salaries were raised, and education efforts were made to improve education for rural students.
Blanton returned to university teaching at UT in 1927 where she remained the rest of her life. In her career, she published several books, founded the Delta Kappa Gamma Society (an honorary society for women teachers), and took an interest in rural schools. Several public schools in Texas are named after her.

Meet our 5th Grade Team
Mrs. Brent ~ "As a 5th Grade Teacher, I am able to help bridge the gap between Elementary and Middle School. We take the responsibility of preparing our students for Middle School very seriously. And it’s such a pleasure when our once-Fifth Graders come back to visit as successful Middle Schoolers!"
Mr. Mauldin ~ "I love reading with my 5th graders- their perspectives on literature never ceases to amaze me! It is such a thrill to read with my students and watch them cultivate an appreciation, even a love, for reading!"
Ms. Passons ~ "I love teaching 5th grade science because I get to share my passion and love of science and inspire my students to become life-long learners and grow into budding scientists while preparing them for possible future careers in the STEM field. The kids love science because they get to and discover the world around them in an exciting and hands-on way by asking questions and then exploring and investigating to find out the answer!"
Mr. Ryal ~ "Having moved up from third grade to fifth grade this year, I have really enjoyed seeing the incredible levels of growth our students have made since they were third graders. I am constantly surprised and amazed by the things they are able to do now that they couldn’t do two years ago and it makes me proud to be a part of Blanton Elementary School."
