SCS Weekly Newsletter, 9.2.2022
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
What a wonderful start to the school year it has been here at SCS! As we turn the calendar page to September, it has been a pleasure (and somewhat of a relief after experiencing so much uncertainty over the past 2.5 years) to see our students and staff getting back to some of the traditions that make our school such a special place. Kids and adults are building connections by taking walks outside, sharing about themselves in circles, and practicing the routines that will help us all build a sense of belonging at SCS. As we heard one eighth grader say in the hallway this morning, "there is so much joy in the day today!" Thank you for all that you have done to ensure a smooth transition back to school for all of our community members. We aim to keep the positive energy going all year long!
Student photo days, one of the most exciting parts of the back-to-school transition for many students, are coming up very soon. They will be taking place in the breezeway from September 12-14 depending on your child's class. You do not need to order anything in advance. After photos are taken, you can view your child's photo and decide whether you want to place an order. More information will be coming soon - we just wanted to get the dates on your radar for now.
With our fall sports season underway, you may notice the annual "sprucing up" of our athletic fields. Fields are being lined, soccer nets are being repaired, and the grass is kept at just the right height. If you are using the fields after hours or on weekends with your own families, please help keep them in good shape. The soccer nets are particularly tricky to mend, so we ask that nobody climb or hang from them. Similarly, please help keep the playground safe for everyone by not moving any ramps or other equipment that might cause a safety issue.
We had our first school safety meeting this week and wanted to share a few updates and reminders. First, if a student is arriving to school after 8:00, please have them walk to the main entrance by the bus circle. All exterior doors will be closed and locked at 8:00, and traffic into the building should flow through the main entrance at that point. Second, we are required to hold regular fire drills once again this year. During the past two school years, COVID put a pause on some of our safety routines. This year, we received word from the state that the prior expectations around drills are back in effect. That means we will be holding two fire drills in September, with the first one taking place on Thursday 9/8. Teachers and staff members will be sharing more specific information with students about why we hold drills and what the expectations are prior to this first drill. We will be holding additional fire drills periodically throughout the 2022-23 school year.
Please complete or create a Caregiver Account in PowerSchool if you haven't already. There are a few forms to complete through that system, including important health information and permission for students to attend off-site field trips throughout the year. Our registrar, Patty Spagnolo, reports that we're doing well with form completion at this point in the year, so please keep them coming and reach out to her if you have any questions at pspagnolo@cvsdvt.org.
Finally, thank you to everyone who completed the Weekly Newsletter Feedback Survey over the summer! The responses were a great way for us to assess how our community processes the information we share, and how we can do so more effectively. Our aim is to get you the information you need without overwhelming anyone's inbox, which is a tricky balance to strike. A slight majority of respondents indicated that the newsletter is just the right length, as you can see below, and we'll continue to keep things as brief as we can. Thank you for reading this message, and we look forward to a great year ahead for all.
In partnership,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Get Connected with See-Saw
The following resources will help you get connected, show them how to engage in their child's daily learning, and give them helpful how-to's on using Seesaw Messages to stay connected.
Get excited about CVSD’s Playing Fields event at CVU on September 6th!
The Flynn is excited to present a new community project called Playing Fields, a free multimedia event held at local schools. Playing Fields is a "welcome back" party after the summer months that also celebrates schools as community centers. This project brings together music and public theater in an open field to create an exciting, communal atmosphere where students, teachers, staff, administrators, families, friends, neighbors, and anyone else in the community can join in the fun. This inaugural event features live music by the energetic world-music band Red Baraat and a simultaneous performance by the mysterious, luminous Birdmen, a large-scale street theater exhibition from the Dutch company Close-Act. September 6 from 6:00-9:00 pm. at CVU
Caution: High Speed Trains Coming Through!
The new Amtrak service now travels through Charlotte and Shelburne on its way to Burlington.
It is critical that we all work together to educate everyone about track safety, especially students and young drivers. Stay Off the Tracks provides more information about the increased need for safety.
Want to Get Involved?
Please consider joining the Shelburne Community School PTO community. All are welcome! Visit their website for details.
