Dear Raleigh Hills Community,
Last week we shared our current RULER work with you as a community of learners and how we incorporate it into daily work at school. This week I thought it important to further that by sharing ways you can support this work at home. Partnering school messages again at home increase students’ abilities to name their feelings, confidence to share what they are feeling with those that are important to them and allow them to role play difficult situations or big emotions in a safe and supportive environment. The small planned and unplanned conversations you have at home have big rewards long term for your children. Three ways RULER suggests these skills can be practiced at home are by working on “Talk About It, Do It Together and Did You Notice?” Activities. Below we have broken the ideas up into three groups and according to age groups, so that you may choose activities that work for your family and for different ages groups. (All suggested prompts are provided from RULER resources)
TALK ABOUT IT:
Conversations about feelings help us understand ourselves. Share a photo that makes you happy. Ask: What makes you feel happy?
Emotions matter! Share a time you were affected by someone else's impatience or excitement. Ask your child to share too!
Strong emotions can affect us physically. Discuss a time when an emotion made you feel ill. What was happening in your body and mind?
DO IT TOGETHER:
When reading together, ask how the main character is feeling at different points. Go for specific emotion words!
Discuss what makes each of you feel cheerful. Take a selfie of you and your child making your best “cheerful” faces!
A strong emotion vocabulary helps us label, understand, and manage our emotions. Look for new emotion words in songs this week.
DID YOU NOTICE:
Share strategies you have for shifting from feeling anxious to feeling calm. Try them together with your child!
Which emotions bring up the strongest changes inside your body? When you’re Ecstatic? Furious? Disgusted?
Recognizing others' feelings helps relationships. Ask: Can you think of a time you noticed a friend's emotions? What were the clues?
For this age group a longer conversation/discussion and both they and other members of the family could share thoughts on the below prompts:
1. What does it mean to feel safe?
2. What do you need to feel safe?
3. What does it mean to belong?
4. What do you need to feel that you belong?
Then, ask your student if they can think of a time when they felt safe and like they belonged.
a. Who was there?
b. How did others make them feel like they were a part of a community?
c. How have they, themselves, made others feel a part of their communities?
d. What about the environment created that sense of safety?
We hope these supports will help you to make a school/home connection with your students about RULER!

Annual Parent Survey
Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey! Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey.
A link to the 2021 Annual Parent Survey will be sent to all valid parent email addresses via School Messenger on Sunday, May 9. The deadline to participate is Sunday, May 31.

Safe Routes to School Survey
Dear Raleigh Hills Parents and Guardians,
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient, and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31. We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.

Middle School Social Studies Adoption Instructional Resources Preview and Input Request
The Oregon Department of Education has adopted new standards for Social Sciences. The Beaverton School District is currently engaged in our Quality Curriculum Cycle to address these required changes. Beaverton Middle Schools will be implementing Social Studies courses in the Fall of 2021 that are aligned to the 2021 Social Science Standards Integrated with Ethnic Studies. The district has conducted an extensive search for appropriate instructional materials to address the state standards, meet the BSD learning targets, and support meaningful and engaging Social Studies learning for all of our students. Class Input Forms Due May 14th
We are beginning to plan for next year. Part of the planning process is to create our class lists for the 21-22 school year. We need your input! Please fill out this form to let us know the type of learning environment in which your student thrives. This is not a teacher request. Instead, share with us the characteristics of a classroom where your student will do their best. This will help us create our best and most vibrant learning communities. These are due on May 14th.
