Causes of Eating Disorders

There are many differents reasons people develop eating disorders. Sometimes it happens because they are uncomfortable in their own skin and consider themselves "fat". Other times comes from a history of being abused in any way, or after a huge emotional loss. Some doctors and scientists even consider the possibility that genetics could play a role. In any case, it is important to try to prevent this from happening to you or someone you love, or to try to stop it as early as possible.

What To Say To a Friend

  • Try and gain their trust. Let them know you are there for them.
  • Ask them how they feel about themselves.
  • Get informed yourself and tell them about the dangers they will face if their eating disorder goes to far.
  • Urge them to seek professional help, or find help on your own if necessary.
  • Don't forget to be supportive! This will be one of the hardest things your friend has ever gone through and having someone there will make it a little bit easier.
