Message from the Principal
Thank you to all the families who came to our Art Show and Open House. We appreciate your interest and support. Our next school event will be our Spring Concert to be held at the high school auditorium on May 18.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is May 8-12. Please consider taking a moment to give a shout out to your child's teachers. Something as simple as a personal email or note is always appreciated. Better yet, have your child write a message.
Special thanks to our Smith PTO for providing a staff luncheon during the Appreciation Week.
Meet our 2022-2023 Intervention Team!

News from the Nurse
All 3rd graders must have a physical exam done and on file at school.
School physicals are available Wednesdays or, make an appointment with your doctor and ask them to fax a copy of the physical to the school.
Reminders:
Pack an extra pair of pants for accidents, spills, mud or snow.
Return borrowed clothes to the nurse.
Check your child’s hair for head lice, treat as needed.
Dress for winter weather & outdoor recess.
If your child is sick, please keep your child home.
Please do not send a sick or injured child to school with the intention that they will be diagnosed and treated by the nurse. Our school nurse is not a medical diagnostician.
Any child displaying the symptoms of fever, vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed rashes, sore throat, ear pain, productive cough or wheezing, drainage from wounds, redness or drainage from eyes should not come to school until seen, diagnosed and treated by their personal physician.

Music News
Cortland’s tireless music department has recently added a “Music Student of the Week” element, and two Smith students have been featured! Keep an eye on Cortland Enlarged social media and bigger newsletters for the full story; here’s a sneak peek:
Aiden Davis was Music Student of the Week 4/10-4/14 for his progress on the trumpet; and Eden Grant was Music Student of the Week 4/17-4/21 for her leadership skills and how she volunteers to help others…even if their instruments are huge!

News from the Library!
Our 3rd grade students have begun learning about the different types of nonfiction and thinking about which subjects they enjoy and ways to learn about them. This helps us understand what ways we learn the best when reading.
4th grade students are learning how to make a book talk and present it to the class. We are choosing books that interest us, sharing with the class what the story is about and what we like about it.
Remember to keep your books in a safe place and bring them back on library day to either return or renew!
Don't forget to visit the public library this summer! There will be all sorts of activities and events taking place for kids!

Counselor News
Throughout the month of April our classroom lessons have focused on Career Exploration. This has been done through a focus on what their interests are and how those interests connect to careers.
The students had a fun time exploring their interests this month! They did a great job!
