Dear Sequoia Families,
Happy Spring Break! I know this is not exactly the break we were all hoping for or expecting. So much has changed in just a few days! This is an uncertain time for sure, but from past experience, I know there is nothing this community can't handle. I hope you are taking care of yourselves and each other. Our superintendent, Tracy Smith, will be in touch soon about next steps after spring break regarding school work and other district resources available for the remainder of our school closure time. I know some of you have heard from teachers looking to support you and your students. Please remember it is spring break and it's ok to take that time to relax and rest as a family. For some, a schedule is helpful so feel free to put that structure in place for your child and use any resources teachers have sent so far if it works for your family. If you haven't heard from your child's teacher, they will be in touch starting next week, after the break.
Our vision for this school year was and continues to be "Connection". I have talked throughout the year about looking for and finding ways to connect with each other, staff and students. During this challenging time of social distancing and now shelter in place, it feels like that might be nearly impossible. However, I think there are several ways to "Connect" with each other, peers and our staff (some of which you're already doing!), so keep looking for those connections! Here are a few ideas...
- Facetime, Zoom or Google Hangout with relatives and friends. Some families have started online playdates where one family offers an activity for the group to do together and then rotates to another family who provides the activity.
- Are some of your kids reading the same book? Maybe the parents are too? Use the platforms above to start a book club!
- Starting Monday, I will be recording a reading of a book each day and putting it on our Sequoia Facebook page. If your child would like to watch or listen during the day or before bed, check it out!
- Write letters to grandparents or other far away relatives and friends. Include those sports or school pictures you forgot to send earlier in the year.
- Instead of texting, make a phone call, use Marco Polo or Face Time to get the face to face time we may not get for awhile.
- Starting next week, teachers will be available by email to ask questions and connect with students (some have already reached out, I love how dedicated they are!). Feel free to touch base with them during normal school hours. The district and I will offer various supports as well. More news on that soon!
I hope you are well. I miss seeing our Sequoia Giants each day, please let them know we are thinking of them! Be in touch if you have any questions.
