Coronavirus Update from the District
At this time, there are no cases of COVID-19 in Alaska. MSBSD’s consulting physician and health services coordinator are working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other state and local public health partners to monitor the situation and make recommendations for education, prevention, and student travel. Our custodial staff sanitize classrooms and disinfect bathrooms daily in schools. The disinfectant used is Virex, which specifically covers human coronavirus.
It is important to wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer, keep your students home if they are sick, and avoid contact with others that are sick.
If you have any questions please regarding COVID-19 can contact the Alaska Section of
Epidemiology at (907) 269--8000.
The link below is a flyer provided by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Service to help us better understand what COVID-19 is, how it is spread and how to prevent contracting the virus.

Reminders:
Front Door Locking System Lessons Learned
We all try to be polite and hold the door open for the person behind us when entering or exiting a building. In the name of security, we ask that you do not do this as we must verify every visitor entering the building during instructional time. We have had a couple of times in the last two weeks where people we do not know have been able to enter the building due to people being polite and holding the door open for them. We thank you in advance for going against the natural instinct to hold the door open once it is locked for the day.
As visitors come up to the door if we readily available and recognize you on camera, we will buzz you in before ringing the doorbell. If you do not get buzzed in right away, please ring the doorbell and give it a few seconds. There is a 1-2 second delay. You can also talk to us inside via the microphone. You do not need to push anything to do so. The camera and microphone are live. There is a delay for us to talk back if needed. We appreciate the patience with the new system.
Thank you for helping support us to make safety our #1 priority!
Over the Counter Medications
Recess and Cold Weather Gear Expectations
We do take windchill into consideration when considering whether students will be going outside for recess or not. . District policy is outdoor recess occurs up until it's colder than -10. Students must have a doctors note provided to the nurse, should they need to stay in from recess for any reason. If students are healthy enough to be at school, they are healthy enough to participate in recess unless there s a documented doctors note.
If you do not have the resources to provide your child with adequate gear, please contact Nurse Maribeth.
Research shows that students perform better academically and socially when they have time outdoors in nature with their peers in unstructured play. Please help your student be prepared during these winter months. Thank you!

Machetanz is on Facebook!
https://www.facebook.com/machetanzelementary/
Do you want to volunteer at Machetanz but don't always know how you can help? We have created a Facebook Group called Friends of Machetanz where teachers and school staff will post our needs and parents will know how they can help. Search for the Group: Friends of Machetanz to get started!
Allergies at school
We would like to encourage all families to bring nonfood items to share with your students classmates rather than cupcakes or other food treats this year. In doing this, all students can celebrate birthdays with their classmates without feeling left out due to allergies.
Thanks you for your support and understanding!
Where's my bus?
Box Tops Changes. There's now an APP!
There is no more clipping and sending your box tops to the school. You can scan your receipt and Box top purchases are automatically recognized. The school will get credit immediately.
If you still see traditional box tops on items we can get double credit until they are completely phased out. So scan and Clip!
This is a free and easy way to have money sent to Machetanz twice a year. We appreciate the support!
