Fall of Rome
In the year 410 AD, Rome was sacked by Alaric from the north eastern frontier. They were also attacked by Visigoths, Franks, and Vandals. They also dealt with other issues such as disease. The main unifying institution afterwards was the religion known as Christianity. This led to the rise of the Church's Authority.
Secular authority declined while Church authority grew
Monks preserved the Greco-Roman Culture
They often drew elaborate illustrations and created illuminated manuscripts.
Women could only become Nuns or Abbey Directors
Nuns were often called "Brides of Christ" because they swore to never marry and were devoted to charitable work.
Popes and Bishops anoint the Kings
Church authority grew, while secular authority declined
