Good afternoon students, parents, guardians, and friends of Avon High School,
This past week we celebrated “Spirit Week” here at Avon High School. There were a variety of themed days, including Pajama Day, United States Day, Pink Day, and School Spirit/Disney Day. We also hosted a variety of night games. On Wednesday night our girls’ varsity volleyball team lost to Woodbridge. On Friday night the football team won 35-0 over Bulkely. On Saturday night boys’ soccer defeated Simsbury 2-0. Regrettably, both the girls’ field hockey and soccer teams were rained out and rescheduled to later dates. Girls’ soccer tied Glastonbury 2-2 under the lights on Wednesday night. Field hockey will play after school on Thursday. Last weekend our girls’ cross country team won the class M state championship. I have read that this is the 51st state championship since the school’s founding in 1958.
Clearly there is a long tradition of fielding very competitive teams here at Avon High School. The fifty state championships across all sports are testament to that.
As a longtime coach, I always asked my teams to “represent.” Our athletes represent their school and team in all that they do. Our teams should represent our school in a positive way at every turn. Our teams, coaches, and fans should represent good sportsmanship in our athletic contests. Our teams should represent with their effort, skill, demeanor, and character, on and off the field.
We are working with our student athletes and fans to help them to understand that they need to represent. We are in the process of talking to our athletes, our captains, the student fan group (The Falconatics), the coaches, the PTO, and our Booster groups about this.
My hope is that, going forward, our teams and fans will always “represent” our school and community.
Best Regards,
David Peling Sr.

Athletics
Due to the positive response from the online sports registration the past two seasons we have moved up to a new and improved program. It is called FamilyID. We have had a huge request to accept credit cards and this program will allow that. Another benefit is the purple pass from the nurse will be eliminated. Initially, you may have to call the nurse to get the last physical date but then it will store it. And when it is due again you can send it to the nurse so she will update the program or even UPLOAD it into the program.
Winter Registration begins 11/1/17. Click here to view the Athletic website and see more information about what our new program offers.

F.A.M.E.
AHS and Friends of Music Education (F.A.M.E.) will be hosting the 2017 Northern Regional Auditions on Saturday, November 4, 2017. In addition to our own musicians, hundreds come from several towns in CT for this important event. It takes many volunteers to make it successful. There will be approximately 125 judges that we supply hospitality for beginning at 8:00 am and ending at 3:00 pm. We provide breakfast and lunch as well as maintain a concession table for all the students (and their parents) auditioning. We need volunteers and bakers! If you are able to volunteer for a shift on this day or provide baked goods, cases of water or other food for our concessions, please click on the link below to sign up! If you would like to make a donation to FAME, please see attached donation form.
We appreciate your support.

Student Government
AHS Student Government is a student-centered organization that works to improve both the Avon High School community as well as the local community around us. We have been busy planning service projects and in-school events to foster school spirit and create a sense of camaraderie amongst the student body. New members are always welcome to join anytime throughout the school year. We typically meet Wednesday nights at 7:00 P.M. Contact Mrs. Mascoli, mmascoli@avon.k12.ct.us if interested in joining.
Student Government is continuing our tradition of sponsoring a turkey drive for Thanksgiving!
The “Jack Bannan Farmington Valley Turkey Trot” is a Thanksgiving meal drive which seeks donations of non-perishable food items and monetary donations that will go towards Thanksgiving dinners for the less fortunate.
Mr. Bannan was a World War II veteran and a retired educator of the Simsbury Public Schools who single-handedly started this turkey drive in 1992. In memory of Mr. Bannon, the turkey drive was renamed The Jack Bannan Memorial Turkey Trot.
Beginning on November 13th through November 15th, student government will collect frozen turkeys, non-perishable food, checks made payable to Foodshare, and grocery store gift cards. Please help our less fortunate neighbors.
Donations may be dropped off in the designated box outside the main office.
