From the Desk of our Social Worker Lisa-Gary Jones
Greetings Washington Cardinal Families!!!! As we are quickly entering the holiday season, we have to stay focused on teaching our students the importance of making the right choices. In order for students to make positive choices, they have to be willing to stop, think, and then choose a solution that won’t result in disciplinary action. Washington’s S.E.L. & Character Trait focus for November will assist in helping our students learn this process through Critical-Thinking, Discernment, and Discretion. The definitions are as follows:
· Critical-Thinking: The ability to make constructive choices & understand metacognitive strategies to enhance learning.
· Discernment: Understanding the deeper reasons why things happen.
· Discretion: Recognizing and avoiding words, actions, and attitudes that could bring undesirable consequences.
In these days of social media, our children are exposed to a lot of information. A great deal of this information is mixed, both positive & negative, and this is why helping them learn how to make sound decisions is so important. We want our children to know how to process or understand what they are hearing and seeing. Processing information takes time, and it is crucial for our children to take as much time as they need to gather all the facts and then make great choices that will help them grow in positive ways. As parents, you are the greatest resource to assist our students in modeling how to take a step back, think about the situation(s), brainstorm possible solutions, and helping them make the best possible choices. In addition to positive decision-making, you can also share with them how choosing positive words, actions, and attitudes can help shape positive outcomes for them now and in their future!!
In continuing our work together, home & school, we can prepare our students to lead by example as a result of making good choices. Developing positive character & life skills will serve them well by setting in place a solid foundation on which they can continue to develop great critical-thinking skills. Putting those skills to use on a daily basis, will only serve to enhance our student’s abilities to contribute to their community & the world in so many awesome ways!! On behalf of our Washington Elementary family to yours… Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!
Apple Crunch October 29, 2021
On Friday, October 29, 2021 was a day full of activities. The students got the opportunity to participate in the Indiana Great Lakes Apple Crunch. This is an annual event that encourages healthy eating and showcases apples that are locally grown to help support a farm to table experience through local purchase initiatives.
Students received the opportunity to taste apples they would not normally taste and learn more about how apples are grown. This year the spotlight apple will be the Pixie Crunch apple. The students crunched into the an apple at the same time during lunch time and participated in different activities.

We are asking all stakeholders their opinion on SCEC School System. From this survey we will gage what we would all like to see in the school system and application questions will stem from this. We are asking for the community 'all stakeholders" for their input.
Please fill out survey. Thank you!
