How to grow & judge the perfect rose

We have known Janice Lusty fro several years - Paul went to college with her. Janice used to grow beautiful grapes for export & local markets, but had an epiphany a few years ago & decided that roses were her true love:

"My love of roses was handed down to me by my mother, who had a beautiful rose garden. For 35 years I grew muscat grapes for export to Japan, and my love of gardening continued.

In 2002, a local lady suggested that I enter the Matamata Rose Show. I did and I won the New Entrant's Trophy.

From that day on, my desire to compete blossomed. Today, I am a member of the Waikato Rose Society, the strongest in New Zealand. I completed five years of training and exams to become a National Judge, and have also been made a Consulting Rosarian. With 400-odd rose bushes in my garden, my love for the rose has not diminished.

This year is my first without grapes, so my roses have my full attention - a great hobby with wonderful new friends throughout the country.".

Our Visit November 14

After pick-ups, we will travel directly to the Peria Hills (Hobbiton country) just outside of Matamata to Janice & Andy Lusty's property. You will be able to view the roses Janice has nurtured & she will tell you how she judges the perfect rose.

We will then head back into Matamata. Perhaps you would like to have lunch or just visit the shops.
