Counselor's Corner
This time of year students can become overwhelmed with school work. During classroom guidance I have been teaching some relaxation techniques. The Snail Technique is when students stand at their desk and breathe slowly from their bellies. Students follow the teacher’s movements, moving VERY slowly, stretching their arms and legs as they move. You can move your arms up and make circles, bend, touch your toes…whatever you feel like stretching. You will notice how funny your arms feel after doing this—it’s almost like JELLO. Very relaxing.

Empathy is the last attribute for a growth mindset. According to Mraz and Hertz in the book A Mindset for Learning, a beginning definition of empathy for children is "You have empathy when you feel someone's feelings in your own heart." As with the other mindset attributes, empathy can be taught to children. This attribute may seem on the surface, to have no value in learning, but research has shown that children with empathy are happier, have more rewarding relationships with peers, deal better with stress, and preform better academically. There are many ways in which to teach empathy. At Hite, teachers provide daily opportunities for children to glean emphaticl actions and words. To learn how you can support empathy building in your child, please check out the following links. https://www.parentingscience.com/teaching-empathy-tips.html https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/seven_ways_to_foster_empathy_in_kids
Art News - Whoops My apologies for not including the art work last week. Please enjoy the pictures inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe
Mrs. Stanford and the fourth grade have been busy. They have been investigating and been inspired by the community around them, which is a 4th grade visual arts standard. With spring, comes flowers, or in our case the hope for spring and flowers:). Georgia O'Keefe was an award winning artist that was inspired by the community around her. She is known for her representation of the flowers in her New Mexico community. She is quoted saying :When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.
The 4th grade studies Ms. O'Keefe's art and translated that into their understanding of the flower. Please enjoy their work displayed on the upstairs hallway bulletin board.
Art Enrichment - 5th Grade
In Mrs. Leathers enrichment class, the 5th grade has been learning how to use lines, color, and shading to create optical illusion art or OP art. Students have been investigating perspective techniques that make their 2D art look 3D.

Drawing Conclusions in Literacy:
Drawing conclusions refers to information that is implied or inferred. This means that the information is never clearly stated. Writers often tell you more than they say directly. They give you hints or clues that help you "read between the lines."

HMFRC SHOUT OUTS!
Parents, the community and schools working together help promote the health, well being, and learning of all students. Family and community involvement fosters amazing partnerships among schools, family and community groups, and individuals; these partnerships result in sharing and maximizing resources and they help children and youth develop healthy behaviors and promote healthy families. It really does take a village and the HMFRC is so very appreciative for all the support the Middletown Community and families give to our students!
HMFRC Compliments, Concerns, Questions or Suggestions...
The HMFRC is always looking for volunteers and donations; if you have items (we are especially in need of sweatpants) that you no longer need or that your children have outgrown and think other students or families may benefit from, feel free to send them my way.
My office door is always open, please come visit me Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays you can find me at Middletown Elementary. The Center’s hours are 8:30am-4:30pm.
