What's News at Magee?
#4 - May 2017
Goats at Magee!
Yes, you read that correctly, there will be goats at Magee!
The goats will be a part of a culminating activity that students in grades 3-5 are learning about in seminars. Students are studying Composting, Recycling, Public Relations, Invasive Species, Goats, Trees, Restoration, and Prairies/Savannas. With 21 acres of land, this is the perfect opportunity to continue our focus on the environment, what we can learn from it and how we can sustain it.
The goats will arrive on Monday, May 22, and be at Magee for approximately two weeks. Students will be teaching peers from other schools about the topics they researched when they visit Magee's Environmental Education Experience. Throughout this process, students have marketed the experience right along with learning; what a great real-life experience!
This experience is made possible though grants from: The Kettle Moraine Education Foundation, Waukesha County's Green Schools Program, and the Magee PTO. THANK YOU!
Magee 17-18
It is hard to believe, but today is May 2! While we continue to work hard with students in the current year, we also need to look forward to next year. I think you will agree, that the teachers at Magee work incredibly hard to meet each child’s need - whether it is at, above or below grade level. That work often crosses the traditional “grade level” assigned to a child - which is directly in line with Kettle Moraine’s vision of Learning Without Boundaries. We are excited to be part of the district's success story of meeting each learner's leveled-needs and each learner's passions.
At Magee, Learning without Boundaries is visible to the eye by noting the combined 3/4 classrooms, and reading about the seminar learning in grades 3-5 this year. There are things not so visible to the eye, but rather hearing from our students they are working above grade level in math, or applying writing/reading strategies in whatever level book they are reading to become stronger readers, or students moving into groups to get what they need when they need it in a different classroom. All of those things happen in a day, yet to the visitor’s eye a child’s grade level is not evident. That is the work we will continue to do, regardless of a student’s homeroom. Every child deserves to have their instructional needs met at their level of learning and research reinforces that our teachers teach best when sharing the work and collaborating with colleagues.
In the 17-18 school year, we will continue to personalize learning for all students at Magee. We will continue to have 3 homeroom-based, mixed grade 3/4 classrooms. We will also have a single 5K classroom and two first grade classrooms that will work as a team throughout the year to ensure all students have a strong foundation in literacy, math, science and social studies. While the configuration of classrooms is changing a bit, personalized learning will continue to be a focus in every at Magee and in every classroom across the district.
Teachers at all grade levels will continue working with colleagues to ensure students continue to be on TRACK for the future that lies ahead of them; a future that holds things we can only imagine. As we stay on TRACK with the district mission of academic excellence, personal development and citizenship; continued collaboration and support from you, our families, is essential! Thank you for supporting preparation for the future, while embracing the traditions that are uniquely Magee.

Code to the Future
5th grade has been hard at work since February coding with Lego Mindstorms. It’s amazing to see how much they have learned in such a short time! They will be showing off their projects on Monday, May 8 to their parents and the rest of the school.
2nd graders have recently started working with our Code to the Future coach, Mr. Peter. After being introduced to the app, Scratch Jr. with Mrs. Jones earlier in the year, 2nd graders were ready for the online version of Scratch. They have created three projects so far and are really working hard!
3rd and 4th graders have recently done some unplugged coding activities with Mrs. Jones. They learned about computer science without using computers! Students worked with partners to “program” one another to draw pictures. They also learned about conditionals by playing card games.
1st graders have been coding with code.org all school year and Kindergarten has been using the app, Scratch Jr. All Kindergarten - 5th grade students and teachers will be working with a Code to the Future coach next year to continue their computer science journey!
