Modern Bullying
The stakes are higher, the consequences more severe.
Modern Circumstances
In today's society, bullying has expanded outside of the classroom occuring at the workplace, home, online and even still, schools. Bullying causes both physical and mental wounds. Both detrimental, however, mental wounds can be harder to see, understand and fix. Victims can turn to alcohol/drug abuse, self harm and even suicide. Bullying can ultimately leave victims feeling insecure, unwanted, tormented and alone.
Facts
- Bullying is directly correlated with low self esteem and isolation
- Over 3.2 million students are bullied yearly
- Victims often turn to isolation, only increasing their risk of self harm
- Bully victims are 2-9 times more likely to consider suicide
Isolation
Sitting in a crowded room and feeling utterly alone. Imagine living every single day like this. That's where bullying leads. Victims become very introverted and anti social
End Bullying
Campaigns: Victims need to be reminded they're not alone. Bullies need to be told that what they're doing is wrong. Anti bullying campaigns will do both of these.
Stricter Laws: There is no federal anti-bullying law. Although 49 states have anti bullying legislation, bullying is not illegal. The federal government must take action and take a stand against all types of bullying. The only way to stop bullies is to hold them accountable.
Repercussions: Bullying will not be stopped unless something is done. Victims will not recieve the help they need, and in turn feel alone. Teen alcohol/drug use will increase, self harm and suicide rates will fly. Which raises the question, how many more innocent victims need to suffer and die before action is taken?
