Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
May 9-13, 2016
Last week our teachers and nurse Garcia received treats, kind words, and tokens of appreciation! Our wonderful PTA ended the week with a delicious luncheon and door prizes on Friday. Thank you to all who contributed and made them feel appreciated.
Our 8th graders received their prize for winning Gladiator Games on Friday. Every 8th grader received a free shaved ice from Flamingo Rey's flavor station van. They got to select and create their own flavor combination. The Gladiator Games committee still has about 30 door prizes to give out on Field Day to some lucky 8th graders! Picture below.
Friday evening was our annual 8th grade dance. The students were dressed to impress and appeared to have an enjoyable evening. They were treated to dinner from Maggiano's and desserts. The music, decorations, food, and comrade is surely something they won't forget! Thanks to all the parent volunteers, student council members and sponsors Alicia Aleman & Elizabeth Garza for making it an event to remember. Picture below.
Our art students have been busy this month! Saturday, May 7th, HGMS had 26 entries in the Jr. Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). The purpose of VASE is to recognize exemplary student achievement in visual art through individual and original expression of ideas applying the elements and principles of art based upon research of art media and art history. All the students that participated earned a medal and 3 earned a silver medal, which is equivalent to a state award. The three students earning a medal were: Ulises Guzman, Dalton Luke Gordon, and Helena Garza- all 6th graders.
HGMS Art Students participated in the NISD Artfest over the weekend of April 29th and 30th. Original artwork from hundreds of elementary, middle, and high school students were showcased at Paul Taylor Field House. Art Teachers from other schools select excellent works as their picks for Teacher's choice awards. Student's receiving awards were: Saba Rajput- 8th grade, Devanee Heath- 8th grade, Manuel Zuniga- 8th grade, Kassi Wilson- 8th grade, Joyce Huang- 7th grade, Valeria Flores Flores- 6th grade, Donovan Eden- 6th grade, and Raquelle Smith- 6th grade.
We're so fortunate to have talented art teachers that provide such rich artistic experiences for our students. Thanks to Leslie Matiacio and Linzie Fitzgerald for everything they do for our students. Pictures of their creations are below.
This week our students will be taking the STAAR test. With the amount of teacher training the district and our school has invested in, the targeted instruction and analysis, dedicated parents and students, I am confident we will excel. Our school is much more than test scores. There are so many more things that a school should provide. A school should be a place to explore new interests, grow the concept of service, expand the mind in fine arts, challenge the body in physical education and competition, navigate the social complexities, and so much more. I believe Garcia is that place. We are constantly growing and learning. When we get our scores back, remember that we lead in so much more that will never show up on a state report card. The art students listed above are proof of that!
One of our parents shared a website she found to assist her 8th grader with Algebra homework. I have included that at the bottom of the newsletter. Thanks for sharing Mrs. Allen!
It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!
