Principal's Message
Aloha Hickam Families,
What a great first month back! It has been wonderful to see our Hickam students getting to know their teachers, and friends while immersing themselves in the curricular subjects. I hope your child/children have shared some of the wonderful things they have learned in music, tech, p.e., media, and choose love.
Our school activities have already started. Our Falcon Safety Patrol Officers have been helping assist with drop off/pick up. Anchored4Life Team leaders finished their "Welcome Garden" over the summer and have begun meeting our new students as they enter Hickam. Broadcast club students have already started their projects this year. Our Volleyball team is practicing for their tournament this month. This is only the beginning. We hope to provide more opportunities in the future for students to participate in our school community.
Sincerely,
Patrick Wetzel
Principal

Nut/Tree Nut-Free School Policy
There is a high population of students at Hickam Elementary who are highly allergic to nut products and their by-products. Nut allergies can be severe and life-threatening, which is why we need everyone’s cooperation. Even a tiny amount can cause a severe reaction. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority; therefore, do not send any nut products to school. Your assistance with this matter is deeply appreciated.
Birthday parties are a special time for children. If you would like to send in baked goods, please be careful about ingredients. All rooms will be designated as nut/tree nut allergy aware spaces. Please look over the ingredients on the outside of the package and confirm what you are bringing with your student's teacher prior to arrival at school. Home baked goods are not allowed.

Lunch Count Month
August 15th to September 14 is school lunch count month. If you are able to, please support the cafeteria by purchasing meals during this period. Meals purchased can lead to additional funding of cafeteria positions. Our cafeteria does an excellent job providing delicious and quick meal service for all of our students. Lets do what we can to ensure they continue to do so.
Breakfast is served from 7:10 AM - 7:40 AM. The cost of breakfast is $1.10. The cost of lunch is $2.50. Cash Payments (exact change) can be made in the front office. You can also set up an account at https://www.EZSchoolPay.com to add funds online to your student's school meal account. Parents are prohibited from eating school breakfast or lunch with their children. Your understanding in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Anchored 4 Life Tip and Quote of the Month!
"A friend is what the heart needs all the time." - Henry Van Dyke
Tip: Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June to November, which could lead to tsunami warnings and evacuation of houses near the ocean. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency recommends having 2 weeks of food, water, emergency supplies prepared for this entire season. You can download the HNL INFO app to stay up to date on things happening in Honolulu including weather advisories
The Parent-Community Networking Centers (PCNCs) serve to create supportive partnerships among the home, the school, and the community for the purposes of supporting student success, and building a sense of family and community. The PCNCs are school-based centers for families, volunteers and community to identify their strengths, collaborate, make decisions and create partnerships.
With this in mind, we manage a transition center to help students and families with PCS, deployment and reintegration to include a peer-to-peer support group (Anchord 4 Life) to help your new students find their footing at our school. You can reach us at g-209-pcnc@k12.hi.us
Choose Love
Hickam Elementary's Social Emotional Learning program is called Choose Love, and we are excited to share it with you! The program focuses on a simple 4-part formula. Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choose Love Formula. Each quarter, your child will receive lessons on each of these pillars beginning with Courage.
“Courage is the willingness and ability to work through obstacles despite feeling embarrassment, fear, reluctance, or uncertainty.” -Choose Love Movement
Our goal, through these lessons, is for our students to gain lifelong skills such as having a positive attitude towards themselves and others, developing healthy friendships, enhancing their self-esteem, and much more. Beyond the countless benefits of learning and practicing these 4 pillars, our children will take the knowledge and skills gained from these lessons throughout their lives. Please engage your child in conversations about what they are learning in school because we would love to see the skills they are learning, practiced at home as well. If you would like to learn more about Choose Love, please go to the following website: https://chooselovemovement.org/home/
This is the Choose Love for Home 2.0 (free) at home component of the program if you would like to continue the conversations and activities as a family.
