Eric Carle

The Beginning of His Career
When Eric Carle was six, his parents moved the family to Germany where he went to school and was educated. He always wanted to return to America and when he did, he met author Bill Martin Jr., who turned Eric’s life around. Bill Martin Jr. sought out Eric Carle to be the illustrator for the book he had written.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Eric Carle is best known for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has been written in 50 languages and 33 million copies have been sold.
The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
At the age of 85, Eric Carle has still not retired from writing or drawing. In fact, he has created a way for everyone to see not only his work, but the work of other illustrators. Eric and his wife, Barbara, have actually opened the first museum of picture book art in the country and he named it after himself.
