Career Day - November 3, 2016

We are planning our annual CAREER DAY for all of our students. Parents and volunteers from the community are invited to participate. YOUR career is important to our students. We will need adults who are interested in stimulating and enriching the students’ knowledge and in giving the students an opportunity to learn about exciting career choices. You are an invaluable resource to offer our students. Together, let us expand our students’ career visions.

We welcome your volunteer involvement from one class period to the entire day if you choose. There will be one career presentation per class period. The presentation will last 20 minutes with a ten-minute question and answer session. The goal is for each student to arrive at each of his/her four core subject class periods and hear a presenter speak about his/her career. By the end of the day, every student will have heard four different presenters.

If you are interested in presenting, please complete this form and return the bottom part to me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you have friends or colleagues who are interested, please copy this flyer and pass it on to them. More information may be obtained by calling me or sending me an e-mail.

STAAR Parent Guide

Cowboy Character

There’s a lot to learn here at school: facts, ideas, methods, math, vocabulary, and history. Then you go home and there’s still more to learn: how to fold laundry, how to cook a meal, or how to mow the lawn. It can be overwhelming at times.

There is a trick for making it all a little easier, and this is how newswoman Diane Sawyer said it: “I think the one lesson I have learned is that there is no substitute for paying attention.”

Today, make it easier on yourself by listening and paying attention to your parents, teachers, and coaches. After all, why learn the hard way when you can learn from the experience of those a little older and wiser?

RODEO Tip of the Week

Basic Principles of Good Parent/Child Communication

Continued from last week, more techniques for parents on how to communicate effectively with their children are listed below.

  • Don’t be a wipe-out artist, unraveling minor threads of a story and never allowing the child’s own theme to develop. This is the parent who reacts to the incidentals of a message while the main idea is listed: i.e., the child starts to tell about what happened and the parent says, “I don’t care what they are doing, but you had better not be involved in anything like that.”
  • Don’t ask why, but do ask what happened.
  • If you have knowledge of the situation, confront your child with the information that you know or have been told.
  • Keep adult talking (“You’ll talk when I’m finished.” “I know what’s best for you.” “Just do what I say and that will solve the problem”), preaching and moralizing to a minimum because they are not helpful in getting communication open and keeping it open.
  • Don’t use put-down words or statements: dumb, stupid, lazy: “Stupid, that makes no sense at all” or “What do you know, you’re just a child.”
  • Assist the child in planning some specific steps to the solution.
  • Show that you accept your child herself, regardless of what she has or has not done.
  • Reinforce your child for keeping communication open. Do this by accepting him and praising his efforts to communicate.

Look for next week’s Rodeo Tip.
