Ares somzèe
descrizione dell'opera
description of the artwork
Antique marble copy, imperial Roman era, of a Greek bronze statue of the severe classical style (years 460-450 BC). A vigorous young man, muscular powerful and well rendered, is shown standing, resting on the right leg (reinforced by a tree trunk, support characteristic of Roman copies). His nudity and the helmet he wears designate him as a warrior hero, probably belonging to the epic world, but, in the absence of works of comparison and without knowing more the original context, it is difficult to propose a more precise identification. The head is slightly turned to the left. The helmet covers the forehead and thus reinforces the line of the brow ridges, giving the look a real intensity. It also retains the hair, whose length is suggested only by the broad twist knotted on the neck. Laterally folded cheekbones are partially preserved but there is no apparent trace of a crest. The old, erroneous restorations of the arms, legs and neck were removed in the early 1970s. However, the presence of retained tenons on the torso makes it possible to determine that the right arm, folded towards the shoulder, was holding a spear. the vertical, parallel to the right side, and that the left arm was to be partly concealed under a large round shield which completed the armament. It is likely that the original statue had a votive function; perhaps it belonged to a larger group, due to a famous sculptor of the first half of the fifth century BC.
