What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes is a disease that usually affects pregnant woman that have not previously had diabetes. It usually affects womans high blood sugar levels during pregnancy.

Common Symptoms/ Problems

Symptoms that pregnant woman may experience include high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. A woman may also experience drowsiness, and excessive exhaustion.

Symptoms may also include excessive hunger, fatigue, increased thirst, frequent urination, and even yeast infection.

Problems that affect the baby are that they may have excessive birth weight, they are likely to be born prematurely, experience respitory distress syndrome, and they have a high chance of having Type 2 Diabetes in their later years of life. Problems can also occur with the mother. If giving birth prematurely, this could harm both the mother, and the baby, especially with the mothers low blood sugar.

Foods to Avoid

Pregnant woman with Gestational diabetes are recommanded to stay away from foods that are high in sugar. This includes candy, especially chocolate, fizzy drinks, sweets, fruit juices with added sugar, and most desserts.

Foods that Are Beneficial

~ Foods with carbohydrates, like whole grains and beans are very benificial!

~ Things that are packed with protein, like milk.

~ Fruits and vegatables

~ Plenty of fat free foods, or low fat dairy foods.

Long- Term affects of Gestational Diabetes

~ Obesity

~ Type 2 Diabetes

~ Metabolic Syndrome

~ Cardiovascular diseases in a later life

Duration of Aliment

Gestational diabetes usually goes away after the woman has given birth. While there are a few treatments to get rid of it, they are not entirely neccessarily needed. The aliment should disssapear on its own.


~ Diet modifications such as eating a diabetic diet.

~ Self care that includes a healthier diet, daily blood sugar monitoring, exercise, and monotoring the baby's health.

~ Diebetic medications that can help with Gestational diabetes are diabetic medication, and Anti-Diabetic medication.
