Nativism
The laws, the regulations, and of course the KKK
Nativism. What is it? Where does it come from? Well, nativism is protecting the interests of the native born inhabitants of the area, so basically keeping American american. In the 1920's, we were all about this policy. We established many laws to keep this policy in place such as the Immigration Act established in 1924, Espionage Act established in 1917, and the Emergency Quota Act established in 1921. The Emergency Quota Act decreased the immigrant quota to 350,000 people annually and out right banned certain groups of people from entering our wonderful country, cause why not. The Espionage Act was passed by congress so that the government could imprison people who told classified information about our national defense, which got over 1,500 arrested, per usual. The Immigration Act further decreased the number of immigrants to 150,000 people a year.
Oh Yeah! We cant forget about the infamous Ku Klux Klan! During the 1920's the Klan membership was at an all time high and they had extreme power. The Klan member were about to get voted in to state and local offices by having such a huge infulence over most of the south.
