AMMS Food Drive
The Holidays are coming, but did you know that for many Fulton County residents, this is not a time of joy, but a time of added stress as they try to make their meager incomes stretch to include the additional holiday demands.
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
Around 10,000 people in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Roswell, and Mountain Park, though many of them work, are without basic food, clothing and shelter.
North Fulton Community Charities helps 1,200 families, 2,700 children, through the holiday season by providing assistance.
YOU CAN HELP by providing items that will help a family have a Thanksgiving meal.
AMMS Student Council is sponsoring a food drive to help those around us who may go without this holiday season.
FOOD COLLECTION:
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5th TO
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH
You can HELP by sending food items with your child to his or her homeroom where there will be collection boxes! It’s that simple!!
Below is a list of items. Please only send things that are on the list because NFCC is providing food for traditional Thanksgiving meals through this drive. Items not on the list do not count toward the count of total of items collected. Please send nothing in glass containers. Items that are packaged together count as one item.
Canned Vegetables (Corn, Sweet Potatoes, Pumpkin, Squash, Greens, etc.)
Boxed or Bagged Potatoes and Rice (Mashed or Scalloped; White, Brown or Yellow Rice)
Boxed Pasta Mixes (Mac-n-Cheese, Side pasta mixes)
Boxed or Bagged Stuffing Mixes (Cornbread, Herb, Plain)
Bags of Flour, Cornmeal, Biscuit mixes (Wheat, All-Purpose, White)
Boxes of Baking Goods (Cake Mixes, Brownies, Pie makings, Cornbread)
Cans of Gravy (Turkey, Chicken)
Cans of Fruit (Apple, Cranberry, Cranberry Sauce, Pineapple, Applesauce, Peaches etc.)
Once our food drive is over, North Fulton Community Charities will come and pick the items up for holiday delivery to families in need.

Reading:
Reading is continuing with our Nonfiction unit, Tapping the Power of Nonfiction. Students are working in Book Clubs on books that they can read with accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. We have stressed the importance of coming to book clubs prepared with annotations and possible discussion points. Students are continuing to work on balancing their reading and writing time, so they move through a volume of text while still jotting interesting thoughts. Students will have a quiz on Wednesday, November 28th.
Science:
November 12-16 we will be finishing up our geology unit! Students will turn in and present their Human Impact on Erosion projects Tuesday, November 13th.
Check out our project page here: On Level Page and TAG Page.
Our unit concludes with the unit test on Thursday, November 15th (we will go over the study guide in class on Wednesday, November 14th). This unit test will cover minerals, rocks, weathering, erosion, deposition, and soil. Students can study from their ISN, textbook (accessible through ClassLink HMH Ed Unit 5), and the Geology Resources Page (accessible through google classroom).
After Thanksgiving, we will begin the first part of our study of Hydrology. We will study water distribution, the ocean floor, the water cycle, and layers of the atmosphere. The week of November 26-30 we will focus on water distribution and the ocean floor.
Social Studies:
Reminder: The online portion of the European History test will be on Wednesday, November 14th. Students will be completing the multiple choice portion for the unit. This portion will be combined with the essay portion students complete Nov. 9th for their European History test grade. If your student will be out on Wednesday, Nov. 14th, please contact his/her Social Studies teacher to work out a way for them to take the test preferably before the Thanksgiving break.
Upon our return from Thanksgiving break, we will be starting our unit on Canada. We will spend the first week back learning about Canada’s geography and environment. The next week, we will take some time to review economic and government terms and then look at how they apply to Canada. Our entire Canadian unit will be completed by winter break. More information will be sent out by social studies teachers as the time and need arise.
Math
6a:
Students will be reviewing one step equations and then we will have our test on 11/15. It will cover one step equations, equation word problems, translating expressions, properties combining like terms (including fractions and decimal).
The next unit is going to be two-step equations, which we will begin after Thanksgiving break.
6o:
We are finding percent of a number and percent from word problems. Then we are reviewing for our test that will be on 11/15. The test will cover percent, tables, equations, graphs, tape diagrams, double number lines, rates, unit rates, converting measurements, and proportions.
Our next unit, which we will begin after Thanksgiving break, will be order of operations, exponents, and inserting parentheses to make an equation true.
7A:
We are starting Part 2 of Unit 2, Expressions and Equations. This focuses on solving two-step equations and multi-step word problems. We are doing a Breakout EDU in class next Thursday and Friday! The week after Thanksgiving we are moving into solving equations with variables on both sides.
Our next quiz will be on Thursday, November 29th.
ELA:
In ELA, we just finished our minor assessment on fact vs. opinion, using textual evidence to support claims, and finding the central idea of a text. Next week, we will continue our exploration of our nonfiction standards. We look forward to analyzing in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in various non-fiction texts by practicing the skill of close reading. The next test will be Friday, November 30. Students will receive a study guide the week prior of the test.
As always, we thank you for your support!
The ELA Team
Spanish:
Next week 6th grade Spanish students will start reading the book Las aventuras de Isabela. The story is about a young girl who travels with her mother on business to Mexico. There are some new language structures around the themes of travel, personal description, and future professions.
Verbs ser y tener (to be and to have) – Students have been using these verbs to say where they are from and how old they are. In addition they will use ser with adjectives to describe personality and height. They will also use tener to describe hair and eyes. The daily practice with Quizlet is essential for students to comprehend the story we are reading. Please continue to support them at home by checking in and asking if they are practicing at least 15 minutes per day.
It is a joy to share our love of Spanish language and culture with your children.
Wishing you a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday,
Ms. O’Brien and Ms. Saucedo
