Message from the Superintendent

Dear Friends,

February school vacation week is upon us and we wish everyone a safe, healthy, and rested week. It is not unusual for many families to use school vacation weeks as opportunities for travel, but at this time such travel brings with it additional risks for contracting and transmitting COVID-19, according to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC). For the safety of our students I have included information from the Department of Education in Maine knowing that together we must continue to do everything we can in order to keep our schools safe, open, and able to provide in-person instruction.

If you are travelling please understand the Maine travel guidelines:

1. Staff or students who travel within the US to any state other than New Hampshire or Vermont (no restrictions as of 2/08/21 for these two states only), will be required to either:

-Complete a 10-day quarantine upon arrival in Maine and continue to monitor for signs and symptoms for an additional 4 days

-Obtain and receive a negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular (PCR, NAAT, or isothermal) test result within 72 hours prior to arrival back into Maine to forgo the 10-day quarantine. Travelers may be tested upon arrival in Maine as well but must quarantine while they wait for test results. A negative COVID-19 antigen or molecular (PCR, NAAT, or isothermal) test result will allow the traveler to leave quarantine early.

2. If you have a positive molecular COVID-19 (PCR, NAAT, or isothermal) or antigen test, you do not need to quarantine for 90 days (3 months) after your first positive test, if you remain asymptomatic.

We have also been advised to follow the United States CDC guidance as it relates to international travel. The current risk assessment level for COVID-19 is at 4, or VERY HIGH, for nearly every country. At this time, all air passengers coming to the United States, including U.S. citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight back to the United States. Upon return to the United States, staff and students must quarantine. International travelers can return to school after they either:

1. Get tested 3-5 days after travel AND stay home and self-quarantine for 7 days after travel;

2. Do not get tested and stay home for 10 days after travel; or,

3. Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

Any staff or students who have travelled internationally will not be permitted inside the school building for a minimum of 7 days if a negative test has occurred.

Your astounded support during these times has allowed us to keep our school community safe and healthy. Having such phenomenal families alongside working with our entrepreneurial teachers and employees is extraordinary.

Respectfully, Gratefully and Optimistically,

Sanford Prince IV

News from the Board of Education

Superintendent Search Notification

The Board of Education is excited to announce the search for the district’s next superintendent. Scarborough has been fortunate to have the leadership of Sanford “Sandy” Prince IV for the last two years, who has provided 16 years experience, a calm demeanor, a thoughtful approach, and stabilizing presence. We wish Mr. Prince all the best as he steps into retirement at the end of June.

To assist in the search process, the Board has entered into an agreement with DDM Ed Leadership, LLC. The partners at DDM have extensive experience with Scarborough Schools and have all been superintendents themselves. Scarborough will be DDM’s exclusive client during this year’s search process, and we are confident in their ability to assist us in hiring the best candidate.

The search process will include input from Scarborough staff, students, and the community at large in various phases of the hiring process, including involvement in the interview committee and providing feedback about the qualities and characteristics most valued by the community when selecting the next Superintendent.

The interview committee will be a collaborative team of community members, students, staff, board, and administration, who will conduct the first round of interviews. It is important to note there are three mandatory dates for the interview committee, which will be held in the evenings via Zoom:

  • March 15th for discussion about the interview process

  • March 22nd and 23rd for candidate interviews

If you would like to be considered for the interview committee, please click this link. The interview committee application will be open until March 1st.

Additionally, a superintendent search feedback survey will also be open until March 1st. Please click this link to provide your feedback and insight. Your participation will provide valuable information to the interview committee and Board so that stakeholder input can be prioritized during the superintendent search process.

Although our goal is to maintain in person learning to the greatest extent possible, there needs to be adequate staffing to facilitate in person learning.
