The Vanderbilt Prison Project

Our Purpose

We are a service-based organization founded in 1972 that is committed to its purpose of inspiring and educating both the Vanderbilt and Nashville communities to collectively work towards an improvement in the current state of criminal justice system and all those affected by it either directly or indirectly including at-risk youth, inmates, those that have recently been released, and those affected by the incarceration of loved ones.

The VPP board would like to welcome its members back to campus! We hope you all are on the way to a great semester! Please see the following for VPP updates and upcoming events.

General Body Meeting

Our next GBM will be held Thursday, February 5 at 6 PM in Buttrick 201. We will be discussing the service opportunities, the Stories from the Inside event, the Dismas game night, and Reading Buddies Training/Info Session. Please plan to be in attendance as VPP is planning for BIG things!

Upcoming Events

"Stories from the Inside"

On Thursday, February 25, at 6 PM, VPP will host an event entitled, "Stories from the INside," which will showcase various performances--dance, songs, poems, speeches, etc.--from persons who are willing to share their personal stories which divulge (1) how they have been affected by the prison system, (2) what the prison system represents to them, or (3) how our community and world has been affected and infected by this system. We would love to see you ALL there! If you are interested in performing, please email Jordaan McGill. This is an event you DON'T want to miss!

We will continue our service at Reading Buddies, Dismas House, and are attempting to configure other opportunities. Please look out for future dates!

The next Reading Buddies excursion will be held on this Tuesday, February 3 at 6 PM. Please email Dacia Green if you desire to go! If you are interested in reading to these children from The Next Door program, but you have not completed the proper training, there will be a training/info session held at the VPP general body meeting on Thursday, February 5 at 6 PM in Buttrick 201. Each One Teach One!

Our service with Dismas House will be slightly different this semester in that instead of the usual dinners with the housemates, we will engage in a biweekly Game Night on Saturday afternoons! We are excited about this opportunity as it gives a fun, new way to interact with Dismas House. If you are interested in participating and/or have any game suggestions, email Elizabeth Wheelock. Look for email announcements for dates!
