COACHING CYCLES

Brandi Halsne, American Government

Seniors in Brandi Halsne's American Government class are learning about our political system. We collaborated to bring in the Breakout EDU kits to have students work in partners to escape the "Exercise Their Right to Vote" game.

Amy Ewert, 5th Grade ELA

It's once again time for 5th graders to compose a slide show to share their research on an endangered animal. Amy Ewert and the IC continue to collaborate and refine the research process so that it is clear and concise. The results empowered students with a new awareness of conservation efforts.

Rayshel Witte, 2nd Grade ELA

Graphic novels are a hit in Rayshel Witte's 2nd grade! Using resources found by Kristi Carew and the IC, the students explored the unique vocabulary and components of graphic novels before diving in to read a few. Together they supported new learning which led to reading enjoyment and enhanced comprehension! Students are now beginning to write their own adventures in a graphic novel format.

Renee Weisenstein, Algebra 1A

Renee Weisenstein and the instructional coach partnered together to brainstorm, explore, create and carry out engaging strategies to best help students review for their Semester 2 test in Algebra 1A. While standing at the whiteboards, students worked in partners to review the material.

Sara Fischer, 6th Grade ELA

Sixth graders in Sara Fischer's room are diving into the historical fiction novel, Number the Stars. The IC joined forces with this teacher to design an independent project format that would help to immerse the students in the lives of those living in Denmark during WWll.

3 EASY WAYS TO WRAP UP THE SCHOOL YEAR

1) “Our Quilt of Knowledge”

Give each of your students a square of paper and have them write one or more things on the square that they are glad to have learned this year. It doesn’t have to be academic! It could be sports related, extracurricular, social, behavioral or a life lesson. Then, take the squares and arrange them to create a “Quilt of Knowledge”. Laminate, if possible, and make sure to show next year’s group at “Back to School Time” all of the exciting things that they will learn in their new grade.

2) “A Little Advice for Surviving Grade ___…”
After reflecting back on the year that was, have your students write a short “advice column” to next year’s class. Be sure to take the best “advice columns” and share them with your new class in the fall as a bit of an ice breaker activity.

3) “A Simple Simile”
After students have had a chance to talk about their year, have them create a simile comparing their school year to something either positive or negative (it’s more entertaining to have a mixture of both).

“Grade six was like making a really hard jigsaw puzzle, it took a whole year and it wasn’t easy, but I finally got all of the pieces in the right places.”
