What causes seasons?
Misconception
Misconception - The distance from the sun cause seasons
Fact - Distance from the sun does not cause seasons. Earth is closest to the sun in the winter and farthest from the sun during the summer.
Seasons
Axis
The Earth is tilted on axis at a 23.5 degree angle. The tilt does not change and is always pointed towards the North Star
Rotation
The Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours. Rotation causes day and night to occur.
Revolution
The Earth revolves around the sun, in an elliptical path, every 365 1/4 days. The extra 1/4 day causes a leap year.
What causes the seasons?
1. The tilt of the Earth causes the hemispheres to get different amounts of sunlight - causing different amounts of daylight
2. The curve of Earth causes the latitudes get different amounts of direct sunlight. The equator gets the most direct sunlight and the poles get the least amount.
