Let's Start Reading!
8th Grade Language Arts
The Giver
This week we distributed and started reading The Giver! Prior to starting this novel we reviewed and had students utilize the Quizlet in order to learn and practice their knowledge of the twenty vocabulary words for the first four chapters. On Monday we will begin discussing the novel, so students are required to read the first four chapters by time they come to class.
A Zero?! I Promise I Handed in the Assignment!
While grading assignments, we have noticed that quite a few students are forgetting to put their names on their papers. As we put in grades we then assign students a "0" if we were unable to prove that they handed it in. Therefore, we have created a space in the room for these papers so students are able to check to see if their assignment it there to claim. We ask students to approach a teacher with the paper(s) that they believe is theirs so we are then able to enter the updated grade.
You See What?
This week we reviewed the different types of point-of-view while reading excerpts of texts in order to better understand how readers use the different types to their advantage. We then showed our students a couple of optical illusions to show them that there are different ways to view things, specifically these images and texts we read. What do you see in this picture? Be sure to ask your child what they first saw and then the other image that also can be seen.
I Have...Who Has...?
We had our second and last quiz of this unit on Thursday. Prior to the quiz we played a review game as a whole class on Wednesday called I Have...Who Has? The game required all the students to pay close attention so that they were ready to take their turn whenever their term was randomly described. Your child could explain to you how the game specifically worked and which term and question they had.
