Doug McKnight Award Winners
Fall 2020
As many of you know Mr. McKnight was my varsity basketball coach here at CHS as well as my biology teacher. He was also my co-worker for 10 years. He survived a sudden cardiac arrest 6 years ago, battled back and returned to teaching last year and retired from Clawson Public Schools after 25 years in education.
Recipients of the Doug McKnight Coaches’ Awards are the student-athlete - a male and a female - that best displayed the 5 things that Mr. McKnight stood for as a teacher and coach.
Sportsmanship - I am firm believer in good sportsmanship because of what Mr. McKnight taught me when I played for him my junior and senior year in HS. He demanded all of his players respected the game - and that included officials and opponents - if you didn’t you were on the bench next to him - somewhere I was often until I finally realized how important it was to respect the game.
Dedication - a 25 year educator, Mr. McKnight was dedicated to CHS and his students until he retired in January of 2017. Regardless of his circumstances, he preserved, came back to work and continued to be the Senior class advisor and teach advanced classes in the science department.
Enthusiasm - He was the voice of our Pep Rallies - his enthusiasm and contagious energy is what made our Pep Rallies. Filled with school spirit, Mr. McKnight walked the hallways with a smile on his face every day he came to work.
Leadership - Mr. McKnight believed in student leadership so greatly that he entrusted his student leaders - whether that was in the classroom or on the basketball court - to be an integral part of the task at hand. He built students into leaders.
Sense of humor - Anybody who played for Mr. McKnight or had him as a teacher knows that he liked to have FUN - whether it was wearing his crazy pajama pants to practice or blaring Kid Rock during cat dissections, Mr. McKnight lit up a room.
In addition to the certificates, the recipients of the The Doug McKnight Award will have their names engraved on a plaque that will be displayed in the front lobby of our school.
