Hello Families,
The theme for quarter three is: Am I making an honest effort?
This week we are focusing on the fact that life has both work and play. I know this may not seem like much of an "aha" insight! However, have you ever asked your kids to help with the dishes or clean their rooms, and they give you a shocked look on their face as if you just violated their 24/7 right to play?
Understanding that work is a natural part of the day and not an interruption of free time is a valuable insight. When we view work as something that steals our free time, it's easy to think of work, any work, as unfair. Even when the time commitment to do a chore or homework assignment is as little as 15 minutes, the feeling of unfairness remains because the belief is that work robs us of our free time.
This week we are helping students understand that work is a natural part of each day. Work does not steal time away from us; work adds value to our life. Work helps us become our best selves. Work is how we contribute to ourselves and the people around us.
The motto this week is about this balance:
I plan my day to make enough time for work, sleep, and free time each day.
Balance includes a good night's sleep. Scientists recommend students between first and fifth grade get 10 to 11 hours of sleep, but studies show they are only getting an average of 9.5 hours. Sleep is critical, and it affects all aspects of our lives. Here's the National Sleep Foundation for more information: http://sleepforkids.org/html/uskids.html
From my experience as a parent of three, there have been times when my children tend to brush off the information I share with them because it came from "Mom." Working together, we can help our kids value a hard day's work and a good night's sleep.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
Danna Evans
