From Principal Cavazos
Greetings Sam Families!
We've had a wonderful start to our school year. We want to thank our parents for their support as we get all students back to school.
We send congratulations to our Sam Houston school community! Sam Houston Elementary received an A-rating from Texas Education Agency for accountability. We also received 4 out of 6 designated distinctions: Academic Achievement in Reading and Science, Top 25% Comparative Closing the Gaps, and Post Secondary Readiness. Special thanks to our amazing students, parents, and school community for their dedication towards this achievement!
We have a change this year. Student dress code includes Mondays and Fridays as school spirit days. Students can wear jeans with their uniform shirt, spirit shirt, or college shirt. All other days students are to wear uniforms.
We want to encourage all students to attend school every day and on time unless they are ill. If your child has to be out, please send a note with your child on the day they return. Please contact us with any concerns or questions. Our attendance goal for all students is 97% present. Help us help your child reach their goal.
We want to encourage all parents and guardians to be a part of our team to support building a love of learning in your child. Our goal is to ensure all students are developing their reading and math skills each year. These foundations are important in order for your child to reach great success in school.
Here are a couple of ways to help your child at home:
Have your child read every day. Helping your child become a reader is the single most important thing that you can do to help your child succeed in school and in life. Reading helps children in all school subjects.
Have your child to practice their math facts every day. This extra practice helps the brain transition facts from short-term memory into long-term storage. Practicing can be as easy as doing flash cards and asking your child to practice in the car on the way to school or at home.
We appreciate your support as we build a partnership for your child's education. If there are ever any questions or concerns, please feel free to call and set up an appointment to speak with me, a staff member or your child's teacher. We are here to help.
Let's have a great month of September!
Respectfully,
Michelle Cavazos

Let us know if you need an additional one for your family.

Parents,
It's time to get allergy medicine ready and be prepared! The fall brings relief from the summer heat, but it also brings with it some fall allergens, like ragweed and mold. Check out this article from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America:
Message from Ms. McCabe, Counselor
September's Character Education themes of the month are "School Pride" and "Citizenship". I will be visiting classrooms to introduce myself and discuss rules in our school and community. September is also going to be your chance to visit our school again. We can't wait to have you all back in our building. If you are interested in being a parent volunteer, please make sure you fill out the criminal background check located on our webpage. After you have submitted the form, notify your child's teacher so we can verify that you have been approved.
Message from Mrs. Tovar, Librarian
Technology Corner
Students in grades 2nd - 5th should have a working chromebook. Please make sure your child is bringing their chromebook everyday and they are carrying it in the district provided bag. Please make sure students are not eating or drinking while working on the device. Remind your students to charge their device every night. Finally, if you owe for a damaged device please pay your fines as soon as you can. All payments can be made online via Revtrack. The link is posted on our campus webpage.
