Racial Equity Work
1. Empathy Interviews
We learned from our most recent Successful School Survey that there are inequities in the overall educational experience of our black students and families. Empathy Interviews will be structured one-on-one or small group personal interviews with members of Capitol Hill Equity Team, for students and families to share their experiences at Capitol Hill. At this time, these initial interviews will be open for students and caregivers who identify as Black. The purpose of these interviews is to learn more and do better. This opportunity is optional and we ask that you indicate your interest on the form attached below.
2. Racial Equity Listening Sessions (please see flyer below)
Listening sessions are a direct response to our school data showing inequities in the overall educational experience of our students and families of color. Therefore, we're inviting caregivers to join us in listening sessions, informal discussions, and community change-making.
If you are interested in participating please fill out this survey below!
Reminders...
Picking up a Student Early
As we transition to new staff in the front office, please remember to bring picture ID with you if you are picking up your student early. It will take our new staff a little bit of time to get to know all of our wonderful famlies. Thank you.
Attendance Announcement
If your student is going to miss school please email the teacher and copy Lucy (lmorehouse@pps.net ) and Kristin (kluksonking@pps.net)
Weather and Recess
As the weather turns to fall and the rains begin, please be sure you write your student's name in their coat, sweatshirt etc. This helps us return clothing to the proper student. And please send your child with a jacket so they can enjoy recess in the cold and rain.

Please check the lost and found before Friday. All items in lost and found will be sent to the PTA clothing closet over the winter break.

A Local Rise in Respiratory Illness
December 6, 2022
Dear PPS Community,
Like so many other communities across the country, the Portland metro area is currently seeing heightened spread of several serious respiratory illnesses, including flu, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19. Because these viruses have the potential to make everyone, particularly young children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised, very sick, it is crucial that we work together to minimize transmission.
The Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD) has issued a public health advisory strongly recommending individuals wear masks in indoor settings. The Oregon Health Authority also recommends wearing masks indoors and around people with weakened immune systems. The goal is to support hospitals and keep students and staff well enough to continue attending school in person. Masks are available at each school for students and staff.
We continue to encourage families to remain up-to-date on all vaccinations, wash hands well, and stay home when ill. Within schools, the district is reinforcing mitigation measures that have been in place throughout the pandemic. In turn, we ask that families notify their school if their child develops symptoms of, or is diagnosed with communicable disease such as COVID-19, RSV, or the flu. Doing so allows PPS to gather important data that may indicate if an outbreak is occurring, notify the school community accordingly, and take any additional mitigation measures that may be required.
As a reminder, families can obtain COVID-19, flu, and other vaccinations at:
- MCHD Student Health Centers by appointment
- Benson Wellness Center by appointment
- Community COVID-19 vaccination clinics - no appointment is necessary
The health and well-being of our students is extremely important to us. We are keeping close track of the trends in our state and on the local level. PPS will continue to take all the steps necessary to maintain a healthy environment for our students and staff in the coming months.
Sincerely,
Jey Buno
