ELA Orientation
2013-2014
Working together...developing readers for successful leaders
- Safety drills-fire, tornado, lockdown-where to go from the library. If you send a student and they are in the library we will have them with us.
- Do you want a rotation schedule after orientation-how it works, really. Your schedule is moved frequently to accommodate requests for library use. Example: District walk through day coming up, 6th grade research days scheduled

- First semester more consistent than second semester...help students remember due dates will not correspond to visit dates
- Let me know if you need to reschedule as soon as you know. Please do not plan to send your class to the library with a substitute-unless you and I have pre-arranged this. And please do not send your class-or even a larger part of your class without you :)
- I've always thought of us as a collaborative class-please, all staff assigned to your class should accompany your class.
- Please let me know what you are working on. I'll try to include your work, other departments, my curriculum, book talks, book festivals, literary and technology information all to promote successful learning.
- Please help to keep an eye on the other areas also while I am speaking with your class.
- Supervising your class during selection, especially when students are in the stacks. Once books are selected, reading should occur (you decide where) unless there are alternate assignments.
- Choosing books-Time limits OK, but should be well established in advance for free choice
- Very few students starting with fines-how to check online
- Late notices-how to read them, when to pass them out, Email notices will begin soon.
- Hold notices delivered to your classrooms.
- Help students find books-use card catalog, use genres
- How to find the library online
- Sending individual students: use one pass per student otherwise one ends up waiting around.
- Monitor frequency of visits.
- Just so you know-my rule is the student must go back to class directly and ask you to use the restroom, office, etc.
- AR testing in the library...what, if anything, do you want to know from me when students are testing here?
- Do you wnat to know what is happeing in the district with AR (yesterday the entire district was having issues, it was at the AR server end not the district end)
