Sixth Grade Newsletter
January 27, 2019
Dear Parents,
There is no school on Monday, January 28 due to the weather.
English
We will have our mentor sentence/root word quiz on Tuesday.
I had planned that the non-fiction writing projects would be due on Friday, February 1. However, with so many snow days, I will evaluate this week and let students know about a new deadline. They are creating some incredible websites and iBooks, so I can't wait for you to see the final products.
Enrichment Writing
Math
This past week, students took the NWEA test. They also practiced finding the percent of a number and worked with story problems and percents. They have two homework assignments due when we return to school. They are: page 293(2-10)/page 294(1-6), and page 299(2-5)/page 300(1-6). Next, students will learn how to find a whole number from a percent. They will then finish chapter 6 with the Chapter Review.
Enrichment Math
Students worked on solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation. They will continue to strengthen their skills in this area.
Social Studies
Science
We started a new unit last week called Earth’s Systems. Last week we looked at: What is Pangea? What are plate tectonics? We identified the major and minor tectonic plates located on Earth. We identified what the Ring of Fire is, and began to think about why there is a Ring of Fire and why it’s located where it is.
This week we will really think about what is it that causes the plates to move. This will lead into subduction zones and sea floor spreading. The students will also be learning how various landforms have formed throughout the years due to plate movement.
