What Is Happening In ELA & MATH At Hillcrest Elementary
Happenings In ELA !
During the month of December, our Hillcrest Scholars will continue to work as researchers gathering information to support the process of writing an informational book. As our Grade 4 Scholars explore Animal Adaptations and Grade 5 Scholars explore Ecosystems , they will read, write, question, debate, and create knowledge together. The scholars will develop expertise on their research topics. In addition, they will learn new vocabulary which will further support their new learning. The scholars will identify and interpret the characteristics of an informational text in order to strengthen their ability to read a text with greater understanding. They will also analyze the author's informational text structure where they will craft their own research responses using these structures. Scholars will continue reading at least 30 minutes a day from self-selected texts, including texts on the topic they’re focusing their research on. Scholars will practice answering text based response questions to improve their writing skills.
As for our amazing teachers, they will be strengthening their pedagogy in explicit modeling in both reading and writing instruction, continuing to build that metacognitive muscle for our scholars. Teachers will continue to participate in Edoctrina professional development led by our Literacy Coach, Michelle Hernandez, learning how to grade student responses and also access reports to analyze data and create instructional next steps.
Professional Developments with Mrs.Hernandez (Hillcrest ELA Coach)
Happenings In Math !
In 4th grade math students learned to use length, mass, and capacity in the metric system to convert between units using place value knowledge. They explored the patterns in the place value system through metric unit conversions, and they used mixed unit conversions to prepare for fraction operations to come. Students also began their next unit of deepening their understanding of multiplication and division. Students practiced various ways to model these problems, moving from concrete to abstract.
In 5th grade math, students deepened their understanding of division. They began with learning how to use estimation to help check the reasonableness of their quotients. Similar to the previous multiplication unit, they then took their conceptual understanding from 4th grade and applied it to the standard algorithm for long division. Students practiced interpreting remainders when they ended the unit by solving word problems.
