6.RL.2 - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
6.RL.3 - Describe how a particular story's or drama's plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.
6.RL.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone
6.RL.9 - Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
Please keep reminding your student to continue to read in the Accelerated Reading Book. The window for the end of the quarter is October 24th.
6th Grade Writing and Grammar
6th graders are becoming analogy experts. We have begun with identifying the missing piece to complete the analogy as well as identifying which type of analogy it is (6.L.5B). The students with continue with their in depth study of pronouns (6.L.1) as well as their narrative writing (6.W.3).
6.L.1 - Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
6.L.1A - Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive).
6.L.1B - Use intensive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves).
6.L.1C - Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person.
6.L.1D - Recognize and correct vague pronouns (i.e., ones with unclear or ambiguous antecedents).
6.L.1E - Recognize variations from standard English in their own and others' writing and speaking, and identify and use strategies to improve expression in conventional language.
6.L.5 - Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
6.L.5A - Interpret figures of speech (e.g., personification) in context.
6.L.5B - Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., cause/effect, part/whole, item/category) to better understand each of the words.
6.W.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Social Studies
6th Grade Social Studies
Social Studies has finally become underway! We started with latitude and longitude as well as reviewing some map skill. We will continue with learning about regions and how they are classified. We will finish up the month with a study of the major world religions, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism).
GEOGRAPHY STRAND
SPATIAL THINKING AND SKILLS
3. Globes and other geographic tools can be used to gather, process and report
information about people, places and environments. Cartographers decide which information to include and how it is displayed.
4. Latitude and longitude can be used to identify absolute location.
PLACES AND REGIONS
5. Regions can be determined, classified and compared using various criteria (e.g.,
landform, climate, population, cultural, or economic).
HUMAN SYSTEMS
6. Variations among physical environments within the Eastern Hemisphere influence
human activities. Human activities also alter the physical environment.
7. Political, environmental, social and economic factors cause people, products
and ideas to move from place to place in the Eastern Hemisphere in the past and today.
8. Modern cultural practices and products show the influence of tradition and diffusion,
including the impact of major world religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism,
Islam and Judaism).
5th Grade Social Studies
5th Grade Science
5th Grade Math
5.NBT.5
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
5.NBT.7
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
5.MD.1
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
To reinforce our understanding of place value, we created a decimal number and expressed that decimal in art. Look outside our room for those mathematical creations!
6th Grade Math
We combined Art and Math this week. The students used color ratios to create the color wheel using the primary colors. These masterpieces will be displayed in the hallway soon!
Our current math standards include:
Topic B: Collections of Equivalent Ratios (6.RP.A.3a)
Topic C: Unit Rates (6.RP.A.2, 6.RP.A.3b, 6.RP.A.3d)
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by
reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
6.RP.A.3
a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be
mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?
d. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units
appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
6.RP.A.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
