Dear Mountlake Terrace Community,
I have never been a patient person. I want it to happen now…
Lose weight? I ate well for a few days and worked out, I am ready to be a smaller size.
Buy a home? How many steps? Can’t we somehow condense this process and be done in a week or two?
Have a child? You want me to wait how many months?
Systemic Change? Sigh!
So, Covid-19 has taught me that I have to slow down, I have to wait, and I get to enjoy the process. I am trying to be open to this lesson. To realize that learning more about this virus and needed precautions will take time. To realize that it is going to be imperative that we take time to support our students Social Emotional needs, prior to getting deeply into academics. To realize that we are going to need to be patient with ourselves as it takes time for us to adjust to what is the “new normal.”
During this time I have been doing my best to be updated on recent information from the government and medical professionals. I have been involved in district level meetings to help make decisions for our district as a whole and I have been continuing to talk to members of our staff and community. I am hopeful that this information will help me be patient and I know that this information will support me in making the best decisions for our community.
I wanted to share a few resources with you that have been helpful for me:
New York Times- Child Transmission Article
Snohomish Health Department- Schools/Childcare Information
For now, I am going to slow down, read and ask lots of questions. I am going to advocate for all our students, especially those that have additional needs. I am going to seek to find equitable ways to support our community. I am going to listen to what our staff and families say. I am going to collaborate with the district office. I am going to find patience. I am going to enjoy watching my son take his first steps. I am going to enjoy laughing deep belly laughs with my husband. I am going to hug my daughters for just a bit longer. I am going to breathe and find patience. In that patience, I will lead us to the other side of this difficult time.
Yours in learning,
Mary Williams

URGENT - You must re-apply for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program EVERY Year
It is VERY important that you apply for Free and Reduced Meal Benefits every year AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Qualifying for this program not only provides free and reduced cost meals for your children at school, you may use your letter of qualification to receive other support.
Our school receives a large amount of funding for educational support if 50% percent of our families qualify. ALL of our students benefit from this. In the past few years, we have been just above or below that mark and are at high risk of losing that funding.
Unfortunately, we know that, this year, many more of our families will be needing extra support so we want to make sure that everyone who qualifies applies. Even if you never plan to have your children eat school lunches, if you think you might qualify, please send in your application so your family can be counted in our school numbers. This information remains confidential and is only shared with school administration, not other school staff.
