Principal's Message
November and December are pretty busy months around Lakewood Creek. Please note the "Plan Ahead" section that is always in the Coyote Call.
- Today started our annual Scholastic Book Fair. See below to sign up as a volunteer (you get a discount on purchases!) and how to set up an e-wallet to pay online. Students may visit the fair throughout the day, and families are welcome Thursday night 4:00-8:00 or Friday 8:30-12:30.
- Sunday, don't forget to turn your clocks back. We gain an hour in the fall. While you're at it, be sure to change those smoke detector batteries.
- Monday, we have a regular, full day of school.
- Tuesday is Election Day. Schools are closed for students, but open for voting. Make sure you VOTE!!!
- Wednesday is a plain ol' full day of school.
- Thursday is a 5-hour day. We will dismiss at 2:00pm, and we DO have lunches. Then, our Family Conferences are 4:00-8:00 Thursday night. If you haven't yet set up conferences with your child(ren)'s teacher(s), please reach out to them ASAP. Open communication and family/teacher support is crucial.
- Friday, we have no school as our teachers continue Family Conferences 8:00-1:00.
All of that is JUST NEXT WEEK. Phew! Keep watch here and on our school Facebook page for reminders and more information.

Family - School Connection
- Avoid praising intelligence and sheer effort. Instead, have your child talk out their plan for improvement, use a different perspective, or try a new approach.
- Use varied lessons/teaching strategies. Use TV shows or movies you are watching together, songs, commercials, even observations as conversation starters. Let your child share their thoughts through more than just words, such as drawings, manipulatives, or writing.
- Make it a game. Use Prodigy, for example, to practice math games while highlighting progress instead of just mistakes.
- Neurons form stronger connections when people push through their comfort zones to overcome a struggle or obstacle. Don't be so quick to answer your child's questions. Let them think it out. Ask, "What do you think about that?" Or, "How do you think we could answer that question?" Or, "Can you think of ways to problem solve that?" We call this "Productive Struggle" and is a GAME CHANGER for learning. Let it happen.
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
Emotion Management teaches us "how to build emotion vocabularies, practice identifying their own and others’ emotions, and recognize the importance of labeling and managing emotions."
Next week, your child should learn how to:
- Kindergarten: be able to practice asking for help and slow breathing as ways to feel calm.
- 1st Grade: be able to give at least one reason why they think someone feels frustrated.
- 2nd Grade: be able to recognize that different people have different feelings in the same situation because of their experiences.
- 3rd Grade: be able to differentiate feeling content, happy, and excited through contextual and behavioral clues.
- 4th Grade: be able to rethink a situation they have personally experienced.
- 5th Grade: be able to identify things they can change to manage a strong emotion in a recurring situation.

Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
