Brewer's Shining Stars
A glance of what is going on in the classroom!
Math
In Math, we are discussing ways to compare parts of a whole. During this unit we will be creating unique pictures from fractions. This STEAM activity will allow the students to understand parts of a whole, create art and apply problem-solving skills. If you would like to learn more about how the students will accomplish this one activity out of many this week, check out the book, Picture Pie by Ed Emberley.
Also, please continue to have your child practicing math facts weekly. Make sure you mix it up by asking them verbally, using apps and flash cards.
Writing
Letters: Writing friendly letters
Things to think about:
· Who will you write to?
· What is your purpose in writing to this person? To entertain? To persuade? To inform?
· Tell the reader how you feel or why you care for them.
· Use all 5 parts of a friendly letter
Teacher Note: Encourage your child to keep a journal at home and write it from time to time. Maybe over the next few weeks, you can write letters to each other in his/her journal.
Science/SS
Force - Motion - Energy
- Simple Machines
- Various sources of energy
- Objects having different movement
- Matter and Temperature
During this unit of study, one of the engaging STEAM activities will be creating a ramp for our Ramp Race Challenge. The students will be giving the opportunity to plan a design for a functional ramp, create the design and innovate the design if needed during the creating process. Once the ramps are built the students will have the opportunity to show how far their object can roll off the ramp by using measurement. So much learning involved! So much fun!
Social Studies
In this unit of study, the students will learn why we people form government, the parts of government and the jobs of government. The students will get an opportunity to role play some of the different parts of government and discuss how their part makes a difference in our country.
Reading
Gathering Evidence to Support our Opinions
In class, we are still practicing read-to-self every day and the students are learning how to support their opinions by using evidence from their reading. Our goal is to be able to understand what we are reading by explaining our thinking. Parents can do this at home by asking their child, "How do you know the character in the story is (adjective here)?" Give them the opportunity to back up their opinion with evidence from the book.
Teacher Note: Please make sure your child is reading to you out loud throughout the week so that you can hear their fluency and know what story they are reading. If you know what story they are reading, ask them to retell the story to you to check for comprehension.
