Principal's Message

Dear Families,

One of the most wonderful things about Bethany is our diversity. Our school and our community is richer because of the multiple perspectives, experiences, and the uniqueness of every student. We embrace the opportunities to learn from one another, to celebrate our differences, and to build an inclusive community that honors people as individuals and as part of the collective that unifies us in our shared experiences at Bethany.

May is Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI). I hope you will join us in learning more about the stories, music, art, culture, joy, contributions, history, and struggles of those who identify as AANHPI. Books are a powerful tool to build empathy, compassion, knowledge, and understanding. We are deliberate in our school and classroom libraries to provide books that are mirrors (students can see themselves reflected in the characters) and windows (a look into the lives and experiences of someone different than yourself). If you are interested in books that celebrate the Asian American Experience, check out the link below.

https://sharemylesson.com/blog/books-celebrate-breadth-asian-american-experience

I could write pages and pages today! I also want to express my sincere gratitude for all of the ways you have shown appreciation to the staff (and to me) this week (and throughout the year). The love is felt and has buoyed us all through challenging times. As COVID cases are on the rise again, I am reminded of how resilient our students, staff, and community has been through the ups and downs. I had to put one class into Temporary Remote Learning this week (which I did NOT want to do) and we have one more class on a very close watch list. Families have been incredibly supportive and flexible throughout it all. THANK YOU.

I would love to see everyone at the BSPTO meeting next week on Tuesday, May 10th. See below for login information. We still have the jog-a-thon to look forward to NEXT week on May 13th. Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise so that we can enjoy some nicer weather for our event. I know people are working hard behind-the-scenes to make it a BLAST! 🙂

With much love and appreciation,

Toni

Thank You

We want to thank our parents for the amazing Staff Appreciation Week. We can't decide if we have had more love or calories this week, but we are incredibly grateful to serve this community. Your thoughtfulness and words of encouragement mean a great deal to all of us.

Here are a couple of comments from our staff:

Between Librarian Day and Staff Appreciation Week, I am feeling beyond spoiled. The sweet notes and gifts have been heart-warming. Thank you for supporting me and the library - I'm pretty sure I have the best job in the school. To feel appreciated is a special gift, and you all have gone above and beyond! ❤️ Ms. Frewing

I was super happy to come in and find "THANK YOU" in my native language, Estonian, posted in the lobby! I have never seen my language represented in any other school. ❤️ Kullike Carroll, Health Assistant

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! We've been utterly spoiled by you!. Melissa Regan

New Date for Jog-A-Thon - May 13th

As announced in ParentSquare this week, the Jog-a-Thon has been rescheduled to next Friday, May 13, to try to allow all classes the chance to participate. Thank you for your understanding. Our priority is always our students' health and safety, as well as their enjoyment of this event as a community.

Fundraising

As a reminder, the fundraiser is typically the biggest PTO fundraiser of the year. Your donations will go directly to funding important items like the teacher supplies budget, teacher and staff appreciation events, and student enrichment programs.

Great work so far - our online donations have reached 30% of our school goal! The 99Pledges platform is a great way for extended family and friends to support your student. It's not too late to set up your page if you haven't already!

If you prefer the traditional envelope with checks or cash, that's great! Just return the pledge envelope with your students the week after the race - envelopes are due May 20. The class with the highest participation wins a special prize, so be sure to create your student's 99Pledges page or send back the envelope to help win!

Thank you again for your generous support in making Bethany a wonderful school for teachers, staff, students and families.

Volunteers

Thank you very much to the 60+ parents who have volunteered for this event! We recognize the date change may impact your ability to volunteer. If that is the case, please email jog.a.thon-lead@bspto.org.

Visitors attending the Event

Finally, we hope you, your friends, and family will come cheer on your kids as they run next Friday! Spectators will sign in at the check-in tent and watch from a designated area, with no background check or vaccine status required to attend. Children are welcome to attend, although they are not permitted on the playground during school hours. Students will run with their grades - don't forget to check the info packet to send your students in the right color shirts to match their class! Children will be on the track up to 10 minutes prior to their start time so be sure to arrive up to 20 minutes early to account for check-in time. Here's the start time for each grade:

Start Times

1st Grade, 8:30am

Kindergarten, 9:20am

2nd Grade, 10:20 am

4th Grade, 11:10 am

3rd Grade, 1:00 pm

5th Grade, 1:50 pm

Jog-A-Thon Volunteers

Positions are still available so be sure to register in the system and sign up for a time. Major areas of need still exist for setup (15 volunteers), cleanup (15 volunteers), and general support throughout the day (5 volunteers). Thank you for your help we couldn’t do this event without you!

You can log into Better Impact and sign up for the Jog-A-Thon opportunities. Just search under Bethany Elementary by the Jog-A-Thon date of May 6th, 2022, and you will see what areas of need are available!

Thank you for supporting your students and Bethany Elementary!

Important Message From The Steam Lab

As we near the end of our “official” Digital Citizenship lessons in STEAM, I wanted to take a moment to remind families that— while the Internet is a wonderful, powerful tool— like all tools, we need to be careful how we use it. A hammer adds a lot of convenience to a DIY project, but there’s always the possibility of whacking your own thumb!

As our students spend more time online, it becomes increasingly likely that they will run into material that isn’t meant for them. Filters aren’t a failsafe. Even “green” (or “safe”) websites might show questionable ads; feature facts or ideas intended for an older audience; or link to outside sources that weren’t designed with an elementary schooler in mind. (And goodness knows we all have at least one story of an innocent google search gone awry!) When these discoveries inevitably happen, please try to view them as teachable moments. Talk with your child about how to recognize content that isn’t for them, and discuss the importance of curating a safe, healthy internet experience.

With every passing year, the internet becomes more intwined with our daily lives. It is already an integral part of education— that won’t be changing anytime soon! Learning how to independently navigate the web in a safe way will do wonders for your child’s sense of personal responsibility, as well as serve to save them from much potential danger, fear, and anxiety in the future.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. And as always, make good choices out there!

Best,

Melissa Regan
