The beautiful game
Water Ballet History
Synchronised swimming began as a competitive event in Canada in the 1920s. It was an exhibition sport at the Olympics from 1948 to 1968. It debuted as a full medal Olympic sport at the 1984 Los Angeles games.
While synchronised swimming was first included in the World Aquatic Championships in 1973, it took until 1984 for synchronised swimming to gain full Olympic status.
Prior to 2000, the USA and Canada dominated the sport. However, recent international competition results have seen Russia and Japan ranked at the top of the sport.
