Energy Use in P-20 Communities

Community P

Aurora Public Schools Honored at Stanford University & Spring Energy Challenge Results!

In case you missed it, APS was honored at the Connected Buildings Summit from Lucid Design Group hosted at Stanford University in May, with "The Innovator" award for connecting buildings to connected communities.

Take a peek at our students in action in this 4min video!

Through student-led efforts in collaboration with the Energy & Building Optimization and HVAC teams, APS is on track to save more than $100,000 in energy costs since January 2015!

Collectively, our mission is to accelerate learning for every APS student, everyday. The Green Stars Program, through hands-on learning opportunities, state-of-the-art BuildingOS technology, and innovative curricula developed by teachers, has empowered our students to lead the charge for our district to become more sustainable and environmentally responsible. The following schools participated in this semester's Energy Challenge Competition:

  • Hinkley
  • Elkhart
  • North
  • Virginia Court
  • Side Creek
  • Fulton
  • Dartmouth
  • Laredo
  • Rangeview
  • Vassar
  • Aurora Quest
  • Fletcher
  • Dalton

and will be awarded the following:

Earning $2,000 to $5,500 with bonuses for top achievers in energy reduction & student engagement (with savings still tallying through the end of June)

· Elementary – Fulton Academy of Excellence

· Middle - N/A*

· High – Hinkley High School

*No sustained/prolonged energy reduction demonstrated.

All of the following schools will also earn cash incentives from $150 to $900 with energy savings still tallying through the end of June. Full data will be available in August.

  • Dartmouth Elementary
  • Elkhart Elementary
  • Fletcher Community School
  • Virginia Court Elementary
  • Rangeview High School
  • Vassar Elementary

Congratulations to all of our schools for participating this semester! Do you think we can get more schools to participate in the Fall? If so, please contact Julie North via email at or ext. 28668 for more info.

Research shows that behavior change (turning lights off, etc.) can account for 15-20% energy cost savings.

If Community P reduces its energy use by 15%, they could collectively save the district more than $136,000!
