Matthew Turley, a senior at Cabrillo Point Academy, has earned the highest rank in scouting - Eagle Scout.
Matt has been involved in scouting since first grade and has been an active member in Troop 212 for the past seven years. In this past year, he has served as Senior Patrol Leader and completed his Eagle Project. He designed and helped lead a group of volunteers to build two stand-up paddleboard racks for Hume Lake Christian Camp located in Sequoia National Park. Most importantly, he lives his life true to the values outlined in the Scout Law - he is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
Join us in congratulating Matthew!

Cabrillo Point Academy SHOE DRIVE for Soles4Souls- Set a goal, and collect new and gently worn shoes! There are two options to participate: drop your shoes off at our lending library during the collection dates or bring them to our May Park Day in Mission Viejo and help to package the shoes! We also welcome shoe boxes to help package the shoes if you have them. All of the shoes from our drive will go into micro-enterprise programs in developing countries around the world. This is also a perfect example of how to reuse items we have instead of throwing them away!
Please join us for a Community Service event supporting the NEGU Foundation at our final Park Day in Huntington Beach. We will be hosting a Joy Drive and making Care Cards for children struggling with cancer. See the flyer below for more details.

A Month of Math Learning in May
This week, as we delve deeper into math, we will be looking at the following famous mathematicians: Albert Einstein and Katherine Johnson.
Albert Einstein is best known for his equation E = mc2, showing that energy and mass are the same thing, just in different forms. Exploring this equation and expanding on the theories of Isaac Newton, Einstein developed the theory of relativity. This discovery provided the key to understanding the basic natural processes of the universe, from microscopic radioactivity to massive planets and stars. Perhaps one of the biggest legacies left by Einstein's discovery is "that we've learned the power of human creativity in the sciences."
Katherine Johnson is known for her contribution to the early success of NASA's space program. She may be most known for her work on John Glenn's Friendship 7 mission, in which she manually ran orbital equations that controlled the trajectory for his capsule splashdown, aiding in the mission's success and propelling the United States forward in the space race against the Soviet Union. You can learn more about these achievements in the book and movie Hidden Figures.
Estimation Jar Contest:
This is the last week for your student to get their estimate in for our estimation jars! The deadline is Thursday, May 19th.

Testing
CAASPP Testing - STAR 360 - You should have received your STAR 360 login information. If you did not receive yours, please reach out to your HST. This is our school's internal assessment and is the way we show growth. Our school does not share individual student scores with anyone outside our school. This is also a very useful tool, when planning for next year and evaluating the curriculum you have been using. Results can be given as soon as your student completes it.
CAASPP update - As of Friday we were at 89.8% tested. We still need to test another 142 students, before reaching our required 95%. We are so thankful to our families who have completed these tests as it is important to the viability of our school. In order for a score report to be generated, a student must complete both the computer adaptive test (multiple choice) and the performance task (full write) of each subject.
California state testing is critical to the longevity of Cabrillo Point Academy. If we do not meet the required 95% participation rate, we will face serious penalties that will affect the ability to operate and renew our charter. In order to continue to offer this model of education with the freedom that we all appreciate, we need to work together to reach 95%.
Important Considerations
You are enrolled in a California public charter school.
Charter schools do not have the automatic right to continue operating, we are required to continue renewing the charter (license to operate).
California allows the right to opt out, but the federal law does NOT. All opt outs are counted against us and artificially lower the scores for Cabrillo Point Academy.
How Can We Support You?
You can choose to test virtually from your home or in person with your HST
We are able to start a session at a time that is convenient for you and your family
You can choose to take the tests all at once or break it into as many sessions as you choose
Your teacher is able to interact with you and provide support during your session if you are experiencing any technical difficulties
CPA has a website designed especially for our parents that talks about all the assessments we give throughout the year.

CPA Enrichment Timeline - English
CPA Enrichment Timeline - Spanish
There are quite a few overdue library items for CPA families. Please review your library accounts and return any materials that are overdue ASAP. Thank you!
We would love to hear your feedback regarding the library! Would you please take a moment to fill out this survey? Thank you!
Do you need help with managing and returning enrichment materials to the school? Please follow these instructions, and feel free to reference this flowchart. This short video also explains the process!
Please note that while our school has a responsibility to collect back and inventory all non-consumable items, once returned, some materials may not be usable in our school library. Once materials are returned, our library staff will determine if any items are unusable and may mark those materials as consumable. Once marked as consumable, those items may be shared with either the family who is returning them or discarded according to the approved policies.
Please be sure to only return materials to CPA’s library location in Costa Mesa or to your Homeschool Teacher. Please do NOT drop CPA materials off at another school. Other schools do not have any record of your student, and they cannot check materials into your student's Enrichment account.

Homeschooling Advice
25 Things You Wish You Had Known About Homeschooling Before You Started
Is there anything you wished you would have known about homeschooling before you started? Maybe a few helpful or comforting real-life tips?
Whether you're at the beginning of your journey or have been homeschooling for years, this list is sure to make you smile and feel a sense of relief. Shout out to all the parents who shared their ideas with me. I love this homeschool community.
- Don't be afraid to ditch a curriculum if it's not working for your child. It might not be the right fit for them (or you) and that is okay. You can put it aside and come back to it or pass it along to a friend.
- Serving Second Breakfasts is required. I don't make the rules.

Tips for Creating Friendships and Community for Homeschooled Teens
Get creative
Finding and connecting with other homeschooled preteens and teens can be challenging. You have to be creative and proactive to make and/or find opportunities. This might be stepping out of your comfort zone to post on Facebook groups or hosting classes or clubs (more on these below). Just like with so many things with homeschooling, creativity is a must.

Testing
Want to tell our California legislators your thoughts on testing? A member of the public can submit public comments on a proposed regulation by: submitting written comments to the Regulations Coordinator; or by attending the public hearing and submitting written and/or oral comments. All comments must be made during a public comment period in order to be considered by the rulemaking agency, e.g., the California Department of Education (CDE) or the State Board of Education (SBE). More information can be found here. You can also let your local representative your thoughts on AB 1505 by reaching out to them directly. You can find your local representative here.

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
