West African Kingdoms
Summary
In these three passages you'll know that one kingdom's fall led to another's rise. You see the economic, political, and social aspects of the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai Empires.
Ghana
The north sold gold, ivory, kola nuts and slaves in the north. South traded for salt, silk, spices, coffee, and other goods from the north. Dinga was the leader and in order to expand his territory he married his sons to the daughters of other areas. Dinga's son Diabe Cisse tricked his father into allowing him to rule over Ghana. Hard mining experiences and drought led to the fall of Ghana. The religion they had was animist the belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenomena.
Mali
Included the old Ghana Empire. Important members of the empire were the Dyula who were a local merchant class that were all Muslims. They were ruled by kings and the main religion was Muslim. Markets and the trans-Saharan trade was how their economy boosted itself.
Songhai
The Songhai came to control much of what had been the Mali Empire. Came in control of salt mines for means of money or trade. The people practiced both Islam and traditional spiritual beliefs. The kings who ruled Songhai were Muslims.
