Veterans Day - History and Customs
- Nov. 11, 1918, is primarily considered the date given for the end of “the war to end all wars” when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month; this day was given the name, “Armistice Day.”
- In 1938, the date became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I and later the day grew to honor American veterans of all wars living and deceased.
- World War I was a multinational effort, and many of our country’s allies celebrate their veterans on Nov. 11. Canada and Australia both call Nov. 11 “Remembrance Day.”
Customs:
- Veterans Day is observed officially on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.
- In the name "Veterans Day," the word veterans acts as an attributive noun which means that it behaves like an adjective even though it is a noun; therefore "veterans" is not grammatically given an apostrophe. The correct spelling is Veterans Day - without an apostrophe. But so things can get confusing, remember Father's Day and Valentine's Day do have an apostrophe!
Veterans Day Show
Student show attire is listed below; this is to resemble an American flag when on stage:
- Schiefelbein and Bartoszek wear white shirts
- Massengale and Smedley wear red shirts
- Nisbett wear blue shirts
- Desselles will wear the same color as the class they attend co-curr with

Blankets and Pajamas for Seniors
PGES is partnering with Home Instead in their community outreach program called “Be a Santa to a Senior!” To brighten the holiday of seniors who are in need, lonely or underprivileged we will be collecting pajamas and blankets all the month of November. (We collected over 425 pairs of pajamas last year.)
Join us by purchasing a pair or two of adult sized pajamas for both our male and female senior citizens. We will also be collecting blankets to help with the cold winter months.
The children are busy making holiday cards in the art room to add some more cheer to our school service project.
Many senior citizens living alone in our community, experience the holiday season without visitors or a single gift. We want to make sure that these valuable people get a cozy pair of pajamas and a festive card.

Tardies
We understand that on occasion a family runs late; however, we are receiving many students who are frequently tardy to class. School begins at 7:55 and when students enter after this time there is a disruption to learning, their peers' instruction, and as the teacher repeats daily opening instructions, time is taken away from other assistance. Again, we understand tardies happen and do not want to cause any elevated anxiety in our children; nevertheless, an appropriate sense of urgency is encouraged to ensure repeated lateness is curtailed.
Just as with every day attendance, these collaborative efforts help your child receive information in the same environment, with peer discussion and teacher facilitation; as a result of these consistent practices, children are better positioned to demonstrate positive academic growth and social confidence. Again, thank you for your support!
