Principal Thoughts
I want to officially welcome all our 6th grade families and new 7th/8th grade families to Elton Gregory MS! In addition, I want to welcome back our returning 7th & 8th grade families for another year of being part of Husky Nation! I hope all of you had a wonderful summer, and that you’ve been able to spend time together as a family enjoying beautiful Central Oregon, exploring our great state or adventuring outside Oregon. I’m excited to return for my 2nd year at EGMS and continue to develop a school and culture our staff, students, families and community are proud of!
Back to School continues to take on a whole new meaning in the Nicklous house as my wife, Misty, and I start our 3rd year as “empty nesters.” Our daughter, Emma, just began her 2nd year in education teaching 5th grade in Virginia. Our son, Sam, will start his junior year at Oregon State University. Misty and I are still adjusting to the “quiet” after having kids in the house for 24 years. As parents we are so proud of our kids like I know all of you are with yours.
Middle School is both an exciting and challenging time as our young people begin to expand their views and perspectives of the world around them. Some days they have amazing successes and triumphs, while other days bring frustrations and setbacks. It’s important for all of us as adults to encourage and support them through each situation as these are all part of life and growing up. One piece of advice I always tried to share with my own kids and my students was: “Be proud of your successes and learn from your mistakes.” This message helps our young people learn to take responsibility for their actions as they grow into young adults.
Our students and community had some incredible successes last year after returning from at home and virtual learning. We started a mentor/mentee program, where some of our 8th graders worked with Kinder-2nd grade students next door at Tom McCall Elementary. The mentors/mentees read books together and worked on hands-on STEM projects. In addition, Band concerts and sporting events returned, including our newest spring sport; soccer. It was wonderful to have students participating in after school events and to have community members back in the stands. We also had an after school Chess Club with many members qualifying for state and an after school Homework Club on Wednesdays. We were able to invite our community back into a building for a fun night of Bingo, which helped raise money for our 8th grade celebration. We finished the year with a fantastic Field Day extravaganza and 8th grade evening celebration! I want to personally thank everyone who supported our students and/or school in these events.
I’m honored to be part of the Husky community and will work tirelessly to make EGMS a place you are proud to send your child/children. On behalf of the entire EGMS staff, I want you to know we will all do our best to encourage, support, challenge, keep safe and educate your children. We look forward to creating a partnership with you and your family that allows your child to grow and find incredible success here at Elton Gregory Middle School!

EGMS Drop off/Pick up Reminders
EGMS Drop off/Pick up Reminders:
Morning drop off:
Pull as far forward as you can. The first car should pull up to the start of the curve just past the EGMS gym.
Use the pull through loop. Students who get dropped off in the parking lot must cross traffic in the crosswalk which stops traffic flow and increases the probability of an accident.
Make sure your student has their things ready when you pull into the drop off loop.
Drive slowly though the drop off loop.
Stop for all students trying to cross in the crosswalk unless a school staff member is waving you forward and stopping students from crossing.
Afternoon Pick-up:
Drive slowly in the pick up loop and in the parking lot.
Continue pulling as far forward as possible. As cars pick up their student(s) and exit, pull forward to keep the line moving.
Stop for all students trying to cross in the crosswalk unless a school staff member is waving you forward and stopping students from crossing.
*Please park in the parking lot and use the crosswalk if you need to complete school business.
Construction Safety Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to share an update regarding the bond construction of the new building that will be shared with EGMS and McCall Elementary. No doubt, you can’t miss it if you’ve been to school lately. Construction will be ongoing during the school year and it will obviously have an impact on our blacktop area and field access during lunch. Drew Frank, principal at McCall and I have been meeting with site coordinators to ensure maximum accessibility to our learning and play spaces as well as safety for our students. Below are some answers to the most commonly asked questions related to safety:
Background Checks: ALL contractors, sub-contractors, etc. who are on site for more than one day are required to go through Background Checks. Those are processed through a professional organization and get sent back to HMK Co. We then follow the Oregon Statutes (and expand on them in some areas) to look for any infractions that would deem a worker ineligible to be working on school grounds. If there is somebody who is not permitted to work, it immediately gets sent to the general contractor and notifications follow.
Unique Identifiers: We require contractors to provide their workers a unique identifier such as a badge, sticker, etc. For example, a blue dot on the left side of their hard hat. If anyone is seen without a hard hat, or any of the unique identifiers, they are to be asked to leave the site or check in with the contractor.
Construction Fencing: We provide a secure area of construction fencing around the perimeter of the work areas for a couple reasons. First, to keep the kids out of the construction areas where equipment, materials, workers, etc. are or being used. 2) To have an identified area where workers are required to stay within. There will be times when a contractor’s work may be outside of that perimeter, but only with proper notification and permission.
EGMS duty staff will explicitly teach expectations to our students as it relates to temporary fencing on the play areas and updated expectations in response to changing construction conditions.
We look forward to seeing you all soon!
