Welcome Back to In Person Learning at Akins ECHS

Hello Eagle Family!

I know this has been a trying time for us all. As we open our doors once again on August 17th for all our students to return back to campus for in person learning I understand that it is both exciting to be back, but scary at the same time.

At Akins we will continue to utilize hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and masks. Students will continue to utilize desk shields in every classroom during in-person learning. While we will no longer health screen students and staff at the door we are asking all families and staff to health screen at home. If a student or faculty member is exhibiting symptoms, we are asking them to please stay home.

Changes from last year:

*Busses will also run normally with all students and staff wearing masks.

*We will have seating charts at breakfast and lunch utilizing QR codes. (for contact tracing purposes)

*We will have seating charts in all classrooms and at meetings on campus. (contact tracing purposes)

*Visitors are not allowed on campus to each lunch with students

*EAGLE TIME formerly FIT TIME: students will no longer move at 10:30 and will stay in their 1st and 5th period class for student/teacher conferences, Tutoring over Zoom, Independent study, circles, and SEL lessons. Student Share students will still be able to utilize this time for travel.

I realize this is not ideal and not at all what we wanted for the 21-22 school year. We will continue to communicate with you to keep you informed and updated. Together we will get through this!

We have missed you all!

Masks are Mandated in AISD

Starting Wednesday, August 11, students, staff and visitors will need to wear face masks when on school properties, Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde announced late Monday August 9th, 2021 at a school board meeting.

  • "I am responsible for the safety, health and welfare of each and every one of our students and our staff. If I err, I must err on the side of ensuring that we’ve been overly cautious, not that we have fallen short," Elizalde said.

  • "These protocols are especially important for the protection and health and safety of our youngest and most vulnerable students who cannot be vaccinated at this time," said Board President Geronimo Rodriguez.

Why it matters: On July 9, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended universal indoor masking in schools as a way to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19, especially when paired with other safety measures such as vaccines, social distancing, rapid tests and increasing ventilation.

Yes, but: Gov. Greg Abbott issued Executive Order GA No. 36, which prohibited schools from issuing a mask mandate.

  • The Houston and Dallas school districts have also issued mask mandates.

Go Deeper: Austin ISD required masks throughout all of last school year and saw a lower positivity rate inside its schools than in the community at large.

COVID Measures

Akins will report all positive COVID cases to the Akins Community and AISD Health Services.

Akins will contract trace and inform students and families of close contact.

Akins will recommend those in close contact to quarantine.

No 2021 Kick Off Rally

We are sorry to announce there will not be a 2021 Kick Off Rally this year. We hope to celebrate our 20 year Anniversary this year at Homecoming and at Blue and Gold Night. That is still pending due to COVID 19.

Students will no longer move at 10:30 to go to an Advisory or to a FIT for tutoring. Now students will stay in their 1st and 5th period class for student/teacher conferences, tutoring over Zoom, Independent study, circles, and SEL lessons. Students will learn about their transcripts, how many credits they need to graduate, etc.

Due to the pandemic we have seen a surge in the. numbers of classes failed. We will utilize this time to help students catch up to get back on track.
