What's Going On in the Library?
February 2019
Family Voting is Open for Mock Caldecott
The American Library Association (ALA) awarded its Caldecott Medal in January to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." Was it be one of the books on the Oak Lawn Mock Caldecott list? Actually, yes! One book I chose for our list won, and one received an honor. But I'm not telling which yet.
First- and second-graders are listening to and discussing a slew of books, and we will be voting on the finalists that make it through our "primaries."
Families may vote from the full list here.

Getting Out the RICBA Vote
The annual Rhode Island Children’s Book Award (RICBA) goes to the book selected by students in grades 3-5 as their favorite from a list of 20 nominees.
Students who read 3 or more nominated books may vote the week after February vacation. As of 2/7, we had 11 qualified voters. Vacation week would be a great time to get some reading in!
Students who read 7 or more qualify to participate in our annual Rooster Games, which feature multiple rounds of gameshow-style activities that test kids' knowledge of the RICBA nominees. It will take place at the Central Branch of the Cranston Public Library on Thursday, April 11, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. As of 2/7, we have 4 team members. I will be contacting parents of kids who qualify with the details.
What We're Covering This Month
I'm working on getting all of my lessons and resources online via the LibGuide platform. I also post photos of students and their work on our blog. In addition to Mock Caldecott for Grades 1 and 2, here's what we're currently learning about:
- K - Call numbers
- 3 - Placing holds on books
- 4 - Plagiarism and paraphrasing
- 5 - Advertising
