Reading Over the Holidays!
For many of us, the holidays mean family time! In our normal busy weeks; kids at school or daycare, parents at work, homework, extracurricular activities; there is little time left over. The holiday break will hopefully be a time to reconnect, play, talk and rest as a family.
Research done by the McGovern Institute at MIT has highlighted the importance of children having conversations with caregivers in support of brain development. This video shares a short summary of the study.
Consider taking advantage of whatever opportunities you have in your holiday traditions to engage your child in conversation.
Here are some ideas to get you started~
Games- Uno, Zingo, Hedbanz, Happy Salmon, 5 Second Rule
Car Rides - I Spy, Would You Rather, Categories, Audio Books
Dinner table - Conversation Cards, Oral Storytelling starters, Pass the Pigs (restaurant friendly)
Books - Too many to list, but here are a few favorites ~ The Giving Tree, The Book With No Pictures, The Day the Crayons Quit, The Jolly Postman
Happy Holidays!
