Exercise Your Character Event
On Tuesday April 9, 2019, 150 fourth grade students and several chaperones attended the Exercise Your Character Event in downtown Des Moines. It was held in a huge room at the Hy-Vee Hall where Northstar students joined 11,000 other 4th and 5th grade students from around the state of Iowa. The purpose of this fun event is to emphasize to young people how important the pillars of character are in all of our lives and how each day we all need to strive to be more trustworthy, kind and respectful to our neighbors. The event was filled with 90 minutes of dancing, singing and motivational messages from famous athletes,(Patrick Mahomes, KC Chiefs quarterback), Ariana Feygin (a young master chef), and Jesse LeBeau (a basketball trick artist who defied all of the odds, especially his height, and became very famous). All of these fabulous guests spoke about how important it was to stay in school and to practice really hard at what you want to become. They encouraged all of the young people at the event to not give up on their dreams and to persevere.
After all of that excitement our 4th graders were able to enjoy a box lunch,(courtesy of Hy-Vee), at a nearby park in Des Moines. The students were all able to let off some steam and play together before our drive back to Knoxville. It was an amazing and overwhelming experience for our students. We are very grateful to Hy-Vee for allowing this opportunity to happen. Hopefully our students will remember the motivational messages and apply them to their future hopes and dreams!
Here is a video we made of our experience that day! https://youtu.be/MDOQUQiqvUA

Important Information for Kindergarten Parents/Guardians
Dear Kindergarten Parents & Guardians,
*Kindergarten Roundup: May 2 (Current kindergarten students staying home for the day)
*Step Up Day: May 28 (Current kindergarten students step up to 1st grade for a portion of the day)
On May 2, we will be having Kindergarten Roundup for next year’s kindergarten class. In the past few years, Kindergarten Roundup and Step Up Day have been combined into one day. Our goal this year is to make sure our incoming kindergarten students have enough time to start to build a rapport and relationship with their kindergarten teacher, get a feel for the building, and experience what school feels like as a kindergartener. When these two events are combined, our incoming kindergarten students and teachers do not have enough time to accomplish our goals. Since we are separating the two events this year, our current kindergarten students will stay home on May 2. Below you will find some activities that your kindergarten student can do at home: Outdoor Scavenger Hunt and Science Activities involving Peeps. We realize it isn’t ideal for our current kindergarten students to have a day away from school. However, we feel this is necessary to get our future kindergarten students off to a great start.
- Kinderprep students will attend Kindergarten Roundup on May 2.
- On May 28, we will be having Step Up Day for current Kindergarten through 5th grade. Your kindergarten student will participate and will step up to 1st grade for a portion of their day.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
