S.P.A.C.E. Newsletter Oct/Nov
Grades 2-5
Dear Parents and Guardians:
S.P.A.C.E. classes have been underway for a few weeks now, and I am excited about the learning that is occurring in our classroom. Students are working collaboratively with each other to construct new understandings and refine their thinking. Second and Third grades’ unit: Weather, Weather, Everywhere is very timely with all of the natural phenomena that is occurring in the country and our world. Students are exploring the role of a scientist by thinking, researching, and conducting experiments. They are using inquiry skills to observe, predict, and forecast the weather.
The fourth and fifth grade students are investigating the mystery of why fish are dying in the Gray Bay area. As Environmental Detectives, they will be researching various industries, looking at evidence, and conducting tests (pH levels in water) to determine who or what could be behind this mystery. Students will use both inductive and deductive reasoning to draw their conclusions. I am confident in their abilities to find the culprit of this environmental injustice! If you should have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at lciamaga@rvaschools.net. Sincerely, Leigh Young SPACE Teacher Chimborazo Elementary/Cary Elementary
